Browns hire O’Connell as QB coach

Published

on

The Cleveland Browns announced the hiring of Kevin O’Connell as quarterback coach on Tuesday.

The Browns also hired senior offensive assistant Kurt Roper, assistant wide receivers coach Frank Edgerly and offensive quality control coach Michael McCarthy.

O’Connell worked with Johnny Manziel before he was drafted by the Browns last year and also recently assisted former Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota and other 2015 NFL Draft prospects.

The 29-year-old O’Connell has a connection to Browns coach Mike Pettine and new offensive coordinator John DeFilippo from when they were assistants with the New York Jets and he was a backup quarterback during the 2009 season.

“Kevin has already shown a knack for individual teaching at a high level,” Pettine said. “Our experience being around him makes us confident he will easily transition into being an extremely valuable member of our staff.”

O’Connell takes the place of Dowell Loggains, who was let go after the 2014 season.

A former San Diego State quarterback, O’Connell has worked recently as a private quarterbacks coach. He spent several days with the Browns’ coaching staff during training camp in 2014 and impressed Pettine, just as he had during the year with the Jets.

“He displayed knowledge of football schematics far beyond your typical player — even for a quarterback,” Pettine said. “The combination of personality and knowledge made it clear he would make an outstanding coach. He was outstanding in the interview and instantly fit in with our group of offensive coaches that sat in.”

Among O’Connell’s private students have been Manziel, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Logan Thomas, Tampa Bay Buccanners wide receiver Mike Evans, Mariota and former Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty.

“Throughout my NFL career, I always tried to put in as much time as possible with not only my offensive coaches, but also coaches on the other side of the ball,” O’Connell said. “I wanted to learn all the aspects of the game at the highest of levels. I was very fortunate to be around some outstanding coaches like Coach Pettine, who really helped me grow in my understanding of the game and what goes into being successful on Sundays.”

Roper, 42, spent last season as offensive coordinator at Florida and worked at Duke from 2008 to 2013 in the same role.

Edgerly joined the Browns’ player personnel staff in 2013 and will work with new wide receivers coach Joker Phillips.

McCarthy, 29, served as tight ends coach at North Carolina Central in 2014. He replaces Richard Hightower, who became an assistant special teams coach with the San Francisco 49ers.
