Browns could lose draft pick; GM Farmer might be suspended
The Cleveland Browns are facing the possibility of losing a draft pick and a suspension for general manager Ray Farmer in an investigation being called Textgate.
The NFL is attempting to determine whether Browns front-office personnel texted the coaching staff with play calls during games last season. That violates league rules prohibiting electronic communications between players, coaches and team officials.
Cleveland.com reported that the probe could wrap up this week. The team said it’s cooperating with the league but has not confirmed or denied whether the Browns engaged in such activity.
Farmer could be suspended for as many as three to four games and the team might lose a middle-round draft pick, according to the report.
It’s believed that former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan left the Browns after the season at least in part because of executive-level meddling with play-calling. He is now with the Atlanta Falcons.
Cleveland.com reported last month that Farmer allegedly was the staff member who violated the texting ban during several games. According to CBSSports.com, some of those texts with play calls went to Browns quarterback coach Dowell Loggains in the coaches’ booth.
