Browns coach not ready to name QB starter
Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine was not ready on Monday afternoon to name his starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
He must choose between veteran Brian Hoyer, who has started the first 13 games, and rookie Johnny Manziel.
“We’re going to meet on that here in the coming hours,” Pettine said during his press conference on Monday. “I’m not prepared to comment on it at this point due to the fact that I have not spoken to both of the players involved.”
It is speculated that Pettine would need to speak to both players only if he planned to make a change and start Manziel.
Pettine said the Browns passing game in the 25-24 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday was “substandard for a lot of reasons.” He said Hoyer “missed some throws” and called the team’s offensive performance “wildly inconsistent.”
The Browns are seriously considering making Manziel the starter, according to NFL Media’s Albert Breer. A decision could be made by late Monday.
Pettine said Manziel would “absolutely” be ready to play if he is named the starter.
Hoyer told reporters Monday that he has not been told whether he will start on Sunday and that he was “still preparing the same way.”
Manziel led an eight-play, 80-yard scoring drive when he replaced Hoyer against the Buffalo Bills two weeks ago.
Hoyer guided the Browns (7-6) to a surprising 6-3 start. But he has led the team to just one touchdown in Cleveland’s last 29 possessions with him as quarterback. In the past three games, Hoyer had thrown seven interceptions and no touchdown passes.
Hoyer said he has not been told whether he or Manziel would be the starter.
“It’s [coach Mike Pettine’s] decision, and I respect his decision,” Hoyer said, according to ESPN.com. “For me, I just have to keep the same mentality. This is about being mentally tough. If anything, I think I’ve proven I can handle that. I’ll keep the same attitude.”
