Browns 29, Titans 28

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Cleveland Browns snapped their 12-game road losing streak Sunday in incredible fashion, beating the Tennessee Titans 29-28.

Trailing 28-3 late in the first half, the Browns reeled Tennessee in and completed the rally when quarterback Brian Hoyer hit wide receiver Travis Benjamin with a 6-yard touchdown pass with 1:09 left at LP Field.

Cleveland (2-2) hadn’t won a road game since Dec. 1, 2012, in Oakland. It lost the last three road games of that season, all eight away contests last year and its first road game this season in Pittsburgh.

The Browns started their winning drive from the Titans’ 42-yard line after backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, who replaced injured Jake Locker late in the second quarter, was stuffed for no gain on a 4th-and-1 sneak with 3:03 left.

Hoyer, who completed 21 of 37 passes for 292 yards, found wide receiver Miles Austin with a 23-yard pass to the 17 with two minutes left. Three plays later, Hoyer connected for Benjamin, who made a leaping catch in the back of the end zone.

Locker injured his right hand when he hit it on the helmet of cornerback Buster Skrine with 4:04 left in the half. Skrine was called for roughing the passer when he struck Locker in the helmet.

Locker, who completed 8-of-11 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown while rushing four times for 34 yards and a score, returned to the sideline after halftime with his right hand heavily wrapped. There was no word from the Titans as to the severity of Locker’s injury.

Whitehurst connected with wide receiver Kendall Wright on an 11-yard touchdown pass two plays after Locker’s injury for a 21-3 Tennessee lead. Whitehurst made it 28-3 with 2:44 left in the half when he hit wide receiver Justin Hunter for a 75-yard scoring strike.

Cleveland cut the deficit to 28-10 when Hoyer found tight end Jim Dray for a 1-yard touchdown pass with 12 seconds remaining in the half.

Kicker Billy Cundiff drilled a 42-yard field goal at the 12:55 mark of the third quarter to make it 28-13 and linebacker Tank Carder drew the Browns within 28-15 when he blocked Brett Kern’s punt out of the end zone for a safety with 11:02 left in the game.

Following the safety, Cleveland edged within six points on Hoyer’s 17-yard scoring strike to Benjamin. Earlier in the drive, an interception by cornerback Jason McCourty was nullified by multiple penalties, including a scuffle that resulted in the ejection of defensive end Derrick Morgan.

NOTES: Tennessee CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson (concussion) was inactive for the game, replaced by third-year pro Coty Sensabaugh. … This is only the fifth time the Titans and Browns have played since the NFL changed its divisional alignment following the 2001 season. The teams used to play twice a year in the old AFC Central. … Cleveland DE Phil Taylor (knee) left the game in the first half and did not return.
