Broncos hire Phillips as defensive coordinator
The Denver Broncos hired Wade Phillips as their defensive coordinator, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday.
Phillips, 67, will again work under Gary Kubiak, who was recently hired as the Broncos’ head coach, replacing John Fox.
Phillips was the Houston Texans’ defensive coordinator in 2013 when Kubiak was the Texans’ head coach. Phillips later took over as the Texans’ interim head coach 13 games into that 2013 season after Kubiak was fired. Houston lost all three of its games with Phillips in charge.
Phillips was out of football last season.
Before hiring Phillips, the Broncos were unsuccessful in their attempts to hire Cincinnati Bengals defensive backs coach Vance Joseph as their defensive coordinator. Joseph is under contract with the Bengals, who would not release him.
Phillips has coached in Denver before. He was the Broncos’ defensive coordinator from 1989 to 1992, and was Denver’s head coach in 1993 after Dan Reeves was fired.
The Broncos went 9-7 and 7-9 in Phillips’ two seasons as head coach.
Phillips owns an 82-64 career regular-season record as an NFL head coach, including interim stints with the New Orleans Saints in 1985, the Atlanta Falcons in 2003 and the Texans two years ago. He posted a 29-19 mark with the Buffalo Bills from 1998-2000 and a 34-22 record with the Dallas Cowboys from 2007-10.
Phillips guided his teams to the postseason five times, compiling a 1-5 record.
