Brees says shoulder is fine
The Sports Xchange
METAIRIE, La. — Saints quarterback Drew Brees said Wednesday the bruised rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder felt fine after a couple days off following Sunday night’s clutch 26-20 overtime in against the Dallas Cowboys.
“Feels good. … (I’m) ready to roll, better than last week,” Brees said when he met with reporters after practice.
Brees, who missed his first game because of injury the week prior to the Cowboys’ game, proudly said he was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice and executed all the throws he needed to make.
“Yes, I’m full (fully participating in practice),” he said. “Listen, I told the trainers and (head coach) Sean (Payton) to take me off the (injury) report. I don’t like being on there.”
When asked if he was sick of reporters asking him about the injury, Brees joked, “Yes I am … so you don’t have to ask me anymore.”
–On Wednesday, Brees was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Cowboys.
It was the 19th time that Brees, who completed 33 of 41 pass attempts for 359 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions, was named player of the week since joining the Saints in 2006.
That’s a franchise record for the Saints and the most in the NFL over that 10-year span.
Brees has 21 player-of-the-week awards, counting two he had with the San Diego Chargers. He, Peyton Manning (27) and Tom Brady (24) are the only players in NFL history to win at least 20.
–With the 400th touchdown pass of his career, an 80-yard throw to running back C.J. Spiller that went for the game-winner in overtime, Brees became the fastest player to reach that milestone.
Brees accomplished the feat in the 205th game of his 15-year career. Manning, who previously was the fastest to get to 400 touchdown passes, needed 209 games to get there.
Brees joined Manning, Brady, Brett Favre and Dan Marino as the only quarterbacks in league history with 400 scoring passes.
–After trying out four punters on Tuesday to possibly fill in for an injured Thomas Morstead, the Saints signed former Miami Dolphins punter Brandon Fields.
Fields, 31, is an eight-year veteran who was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2013. He averaged 46.8 yards per punt — tying Morstead for second all-time — before he was beaten out in training camp by rookie punter Matt Darr.
Morstead injured his right quadriceps in the second half of Sunday night’s game with the Cowboys and the signing of Fields might be an indicator that he’ll miss some time.
The other punters the Saints worked out were Brian Moorman, Steven Clark and Robert Malone.
Notes: Left tackle Terron Armstead (knee) did not practice Wednesday and his availability for Sunday’s game with the Philadelphia Eagles is not known. … Right guard Jahri Evans (knee) worked on a limited basis Wednesday after missing two games in a row, but his availability for Sunday’s game is unknown.
