Braxton Miller, Everett Golson Can Balance Power

Find out how Braxton Miller and Everett Golson can change the college football landscape.

We’re not even a week removed from the National Championship, but there’s two quarterbacks who could potentially change the landscape for next season. Of course I’m talking about Braxton Miller and Everett Golson.

Although Ohio State just won the National Championship, there’s some uncertainty of who will be under center in the fall. Cardale Jones is the one to blame for all of this. The redshirt sophomore went from being third on the depth chart to deciding if he should enter the NFL Draft.

Following his impressive performance against Oregon, Jones was asked about his immediate future.

“I’m not going to say definitely. The NFL is something that I’ll consider. My most important focus is getting my degree, Jones said.

Jones went to Fork Union Military Academy for a year prior to attending Ohio State, which is why he would be able to make the jump. But with Jones’ situation being as fluid as it is, what happens if he decides to remain in Columbus?

It’s hard to imagine Jones reverting back to a backup role after his magical run, but it’s possible. People forget Braxton Miller was a name often mentioned in preseason Heisman chatter. Unfortunately, Miller’s season was over before it even started, after he sustained another injury to his right shoulder.

Freshmen J.T. Barrett filled in nicely as he threw 34 touchdowns to only 10 interceptions. However, just like Miller, Barrett’s season would end due to injury (ankle).

Considering the competition at stake, it’s likely Miller will transfer, but Barrett is saying not so fast.

“This is from somebody who is going to be in the competition, I don’t believe anyone is going to transfer,” Barrett said. “I’m not leaving. I don’t think Braxton is leaving. I don’t think Cardale (Jones) is leaving. That’s being honest. With that, I mean, it’s just competition. It’s part of football. It’s what we’re about to do.”

After the National Championship, Miller was asked about his future plans.

“I’ve got to get my shoulder right,” Miller stated.

Since Miller has already graduated, he’s able to play for any school this fall, which could be the case for Notre Dame’s Everett Golson since he’s scheduled to graduate from Notre Dame this May.

Golson’s situation still differs from Miller’s. Unlike Miller, the times Golson was off the field were due to poor decision making with the ball. He threw 29 touchdowns, but compiled that with 14 interceptions.

Despite Golson’s play this past season, he was still one of the major reasons Notre Dame went to the BCS National Championship game against Alabama in 2012, which may be why he reportedly has 24 schools interested in his services, with six of them being SEC schools.

Programs like Oregon, Florida State, LSU and plenty others are in dire need of quarterback help. This is not to say their current quarterbacks or incoming recruits can’t get the job done, but obviously you’ll much rather have a seasoned quarterback like a Miller or Golson in your corner.

Schools like TCU, Ohio State, Baylor and USC are expected to make major noise in 2015, but if Miller and Golson were to replace Winston and Mariota for instance, you could see the power remaining at those programs for at least another year.
