Bironas speeding at time of death
Former Tennessee Titans kicker Rob Bironas was traveling at more than twice the posted speed limited when he crashed his SUV and died in September in Nashville, Tenn.,
A police report indicated that an intoxicated Bironas was going 73 mph on a road with a speed limit of 35 mph when he lost control of his vehicle around a curve and crashed into trees on Sept. 20. Bironas died at the scene.
“The cause of the crash was Driver l’s failure to maintain the proper lane and exceeding the posted speed limit,” according to the report. “This case is now closed.”
Bironas was wearing a seat belt, but the autopsy report listed the cause of death as blunt force injuries.
At the time of the crash, Bironas had a blood alcohol level of 0.218. The legal limit in Tennessee is 0.08.
Bironas also was found to have negligible levels of Diazapam or Valium in his system that were not enough to impair him.
Police received several reports on the night of the crash that Bironas was driving erratically after he left his home earlier in the evening. His wife, Rachel, the daughter of Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw, called 911 when she could not find him in the house.
The 36-year-old Bironas spent nine seasons with the Titans before he was released in March. He worked out for the Detroit Lions during the week of his death.
Bironas is the second leading scorer in Titans history with 1,032 points and made 239 of 279 field goal attempts for 85.7 percent, the fourth-most accurate kicker in NFL history.
