Bills sign draft picks O’Leary, Lewis
The Sports Xchange
The Buffalo Bills signed sixth-round draft pick tight end Nick O’Leary and seventh-round pick wide receiver Dezmin Lewis. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.
O’Leary, the grandson of legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, started 40 of 54 career games at Florida State, finishing as the school’s all-time leader among tight ends in receptions (114), yards (1,591) and touchdowns (18). He won the John Mackey Award as the nation’s top tight end as a senior.
Despite his college production, O’Leary slipped down draft boards after running a 4.93-second 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine and was the eighth-rated tight end prospect by NFLDraftScout.com. Known for his great hands – O’Leary doesn’t even wear gloves – he is a reliable route-runner but is not a massive target at 6-feet-3 and 252 pounds and is a one-gear runner downfield.
Lewis was a three-time All-Southland conference player for Central Arkansas, catching 197 career passes for 2,618 yards and 24 touchdowns. He ran a 4.58 at the combine and was the 21st-rated wide receiver by NFLDraftScout.com.
Lewis has an athletic frame and is a savvy route-runner, but lacks explosiveness as a runner and leaper. He relies more on deception to sneak deep rather than having the elite speed to challenge over the top.
