Bills re-sign QB Cassel, release TE O’Leary
The Sports Xchange
The Buffalo Bills re-signed quarterback Matt Cassel five days before the team’s regular-season opener against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
Cassel was acquired from the Minnesota Vikings in March, but was released during final roster cuts last week as the Bills appeared set to go with third-year quarterback E.J. Manuel as the primary backup to new starter Tyrod Taylor. Cassel had originally been set to earn $4.15 million this season, but the 33-year-old is expected to make significantly less under his new deal.
It is unclear who will serve as Taylor’s primary backup against the Colts.
Rookie tight end Nick O’Leary was released to create a roster spot for Cassel. The sixth-round draft pick caught just one pass for eight yards during the preseason.
