Bills QB Taylor needs his mobility vs. Dolphins
The Sports Xchange
ORCHARD PARK, N. Y. — Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor missed the last two games because of a knee injury, and while he says all the right things, it is unknown how mobile he will be against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
“I’m 100 percent fully confident in going out there and playing on my leg, my knee,” Taylor said. “I’m going to go out there and be myself, and the trainers have done a good job of getting me back to where I’m at now. There’s no hesitation.”
Taylor must have his legs in full operational order because his mobility is a huge part of his game. Head coach Rex Ryan knows this, and is not worried about Taylor being able to escape pressure.
“There’s no other added risk,” Ryan said. “So he’s healthy. This is as healthy as he’s been all season. So I’m excited to see him. I’m excited to see a guy who can run a 4.4 (in the 40-yard dash) back there at quarterback. I’m excited to see his arm talent and the weapons that we can surround him with.”
–The Bills hope finally to have defensive back Leodis McKelvin on the field Sunday, but he might not be in his normal cornerback role. With rookie Ronald Darby excelling in McKelvin’s old spot at right corner, McKelvin probably will play as a slot corner on passing downs, and might even take a few snaps at safety.
“Those guys have done a good job this season competing on the outside,” McKelvin said. “There’s no rushing for us putting me on the outside.
“Whatever the situation may be, I’m going to be ready for it. Nickel, special packages, returns, whatever the case may be, I’m going to go out there and do what I need to do to help my team win.”
McKelvin sustained a broken ankle last November in a game at Miami and missed the final five games. He missed all of the offseason program, and then right before the start of training camp, he reinjured the ankle and hasn’t been able to practice until recently.
He was on the reserve/non-football injury list for six weeks, and is now eligible to play.
“I really, truthfully, don’t care wherever they put me at,” McKelvin said. “As long as I can be out there on the field and be able to contribute to the defense. As long as my name gets called, I’m going to go out there and do my job and do what I need to do as a player.
“It’s been a year since I’ve been injured. I’m ready to go out there and contribute with my teammates.”
One area he could help immediately is in the return game. He has 95 career kickoff returns (fourth in team history) and his 26-yard average is second-best all-time behind just Terrence McGee (26.33).
On punts, McKelvin has 92 returns (second all-time) and his 1,000 yards and three touchdowns are tied for franchise records.
“I’m somebody they can fall back on,” McKelvin said. “That’s what I’m looking forward to the most, getting out there and making a big play in the return game.”
NOTES: Quarterback Tyrod Taylor’s 8.03 yards per pass attempt ranks fifth in the NFL. … Running back LeSean McCoy has produced 338 first downs since the start of 2010, the highest figure in the league just ahead of Seattle’s Marshawn Lynch. … Tight end Charles Clay leads the Bills with 34 receptions for 350 yards, and those numbers rank fifth and sixth in the AFC, respectively, among tight ends. … Defensive end Mario Williams leads the Bills with three sacks, and has 30.5 sacks since the start of 2013, second-most in the AFC behind J.J. Watt. … Running back Karlos Williams was a full participant in practice Wednesday and is expected to play against Miami. … Wide receiver Percy Harvin remains sidelined by his hip injury and it’s unlikely that he’ll play against Miami. … Wide receiver Sammy Watkins participated on a limited basis in practice Wednesday and his status will certainly be no better than questionable for Sunday. … Right tackle Seantrel Henderson, who missed most of the last two games because of a concussion, was back at work Wednesday. … Punter Colton Schmidt ranks seventh in the NFL in gross average at 48.6 yards.
