Bills owners met with Incognito before signing him

Published

The Buffalo Bills officially signed free agent offensive guard Richie Incognito on Monday after the team owners met with the controversial player last week.

Terms of the contract were not announced, but ESPN reported it is a one-year deal worth $2.25 million.

Buffalo Bills owners Terry and Kim Pegula, general manager Doug Whaley and coach Rex Ryan are convinced Incognito’s past troubles are behind him after meeting with the 10th-year veteran.

“I personally met with Richie, along with Doug Whaley, Rex Ryan and Kim regarding an opportunity to earn a spot on the Buffalo Bills roster,” Terry Pegula said in a statement. “Obviously, we all discussed Richie’s past experience in the NCAA and NFL. We are convinced that Richie is prepared to move forward and has and will continue to take the necessary steps to improve himself as a person and a teammate.

“Following discussion with the rest of the coaching staff, we as an organization will provide him with the opportunity to do so.”

Incognito, 31, was out of the NFL last year after he served an eight-game suspension in 2013 for bullying former Miami Dolphins teammate Jonathan Martin.

Incognito was cleared last summer to play again after a league investigation found Incognito and fellow offensive linemen John Jerry and Mike Pouncey harassed Martin, who was later traded to the San Francisco 49ers.

Incognito has started all 102 career games he has played in, earning Pro Bowl recognition in 2012 while playing for the Dolphins when he saw action in all 16 games and was only credited with allowing 3.75 sacks on the season.

This will mark Incognito’s second stint in Buffalo. He was with the team for a short time in 2009 while starting three games.

A source close to Ryan — who in his introductory news conference last month said “we’re going to build a bully” — told the Buffalo News on Saturday that Ryan considered Incognito a high-priority acquisition.

The 6-foot-3, 319-pound Incognito originally entered the NFL in 2005 as a third-round (81st overall) pick of the St. Louis Rams. Incognito spent four-plus seasons in St. Louis. He was cut by the Rams in 2009 and claimed on waivers by the Bills before he became a free agent and went to the Dolphins.

Ryan is expected to rely heavily on the running game in next season. The Bills ranked 25th in the NFL in rushing yards per game last year.
