Bills’ McCoy bites back at reporters on Kelly
The Sports Xchange
LeSean McCoy is not taking calls from former coach Chip Kelly, but the Buffalo Bills running back remains dialed in when it comes to comments he made about the Philadelphia Eagles coach being racist.
McCoy met with reporters Wednesday in Orchard Park, N.Y., where he returned to organized team activities after sitting out last week, and he said he firmly stands by his comments to ESPN The Magazine that Kelly “got rid of … all of the good black players” in Philadelphia. McCoy specifically mentioned wide receiver DeSean Jackson, who was released after the 2013 season. The Eagles also let receiver Jeremy Maclin sign with the Kansas City Chiefs this year.
On Wednesday, McCoy said the words were his, and he plans to own them.
“I don’t have to explain myself to nobody,” McCoy said. “Nobody. I don’t. I said what I said, said what I felt at the time and I’m done with that.”
McCoy seemed to be inflamed by follow-up questions on the topic.
“Did you just hear what I just said here?” McCoy asked. “I just told you I’m not talking no more about Chip Kelly or the Eagles. So I’m done with that. You can ask me about the Bills.”
Kelly said he attempted to call McCoy on two occasions, but that apparently his calls are not being accepted. A reporter asked McCoy to validate Kelly’s claim.
“Yo? Are y’all listening to me? Can I say it any other way? I’m not talking about Chip Kelly or no Eagles. So I’ll be done with this interview if nobody else has anything to say about the Bills,” he said.
In the interview with ESPN The Magazine, McCoy said, “(Kelly) wants the full control. You see how fast he got rid of all the good players, especially all the good black players. He got rid of them the fastest. That’s the truth. There’s a reason. … It’s hard to explain with him. But there’s a reason he got rid of all the black players — the good ones — like that.”
McCoy failed to mention that Kelly brought in several good black players this offseason, replacing McCoy with running backs DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews and adding free-agent defensive backs Byron Maxwell and Walter Thurmond and drafting five black players.
“I’ve got great respect for LeSean; however, in that situation, I think he’s wrong,” Kelly said in May. “We’ve put a lot of time into looking at the characters and factors that go into selection and retention of players and color has never been one of them.”
