Bills’ Goodwin in a bad spin
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin continues to slide further and further down the depth chart and it’s starting to look like the Bills have given up on the speedster.
Last year’s third-round pick caught three touchdown passes of 40 yards or more in 2013, but this season he has just one reception, period, for 42 yards. Injuries have played a big part in his decline as he hasn’t been able to stay on the field. But Monday against the Jets, he was a healthy inactive.
“I’ve been humbled even before then,” he said. “It’s been a humbling experience all year, coming from scoring a few touchdowns last year to having one reception right now and not being able to help my team be victorious.”
Goodwin’s stock soared in the draft when the 5-foot 11, 181 pounder clocked one of the fastest 40-yard times ever, with a best mark of 4.21 seconds.
Mike Williams, who has been in the doghouse most of the year, took Goodwin’s spot on the roster against the Jets, but he played only six snaps, all on special teams.
Wednesday, the Bills claimed wide receiver Marcus Thigpen off waivers, and it looks as if that move is designed to get him deep on kickoffs, a role Goodwin has had when he’s been healthy, a further indication that Goodwin’s days in Buffalo could be numbered.
“I’m looking forward to this week, preparing and working hard,” Goodwin said. “My last year in college I thought I was going to do better than I did, but I attained my ultimate goal to get to the NFL. So I’m here and I’m going to make the most of it.”
That is, if he gets any more chances.
–The Bills announced Wednesday that Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns at Ralph Wilson Stadium is officially a sellout. The stadium operations staff, with the help of a cooperative weather pattern, also has the stadium complex ready to go and most of the record snow that fell last week is gone. More than 500 citizens showed up to help shovel for a couple days, and they were paid $10 an hour and given free tickets to the game.
–For the third time this season, a Bills player was named AFC’s special teams player of the week. After blocking a punt that was recovered by Manny Lawson for a touchdown in Monday’s 38-3 win against the New York Jets, running back Anthony Dixon earned the honor. Earlier this year, kicker Dan Carpenter and kickoff returner C.J. Spiller won the award. Dixon has both of the Bills’ blocked punts this season.
