Bills get injury scare in practice
The Sports Xchange
PITTSFORD, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills got a bit of a scare Monday morning when defensive tackle Kyle Williams left practice with a bruised quad.
During a running play, defensive tackle Marcell Dareus grabbed running back Karlos Williams and threw him to the side. However, Kyle Williams was engaged and unable to protect himself. Karlos Williams crashed into the leg of Kyle Williams, who immediately hobbled off to the locker room.
Coach Rex Ryan said afterward that the injury wasn’t serious, but Williams probably will be out three or four days, likely enough to keep him out of the preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers on Friday.
The news wasn’t as cheery for wide receiver Caleb Holley, who appeared to sustain a substantial hamstring injury while running a post down the middle.
Ryan was told it was a second-degree pull that could cost Holley a month.
Defensive tackle Alex Carrington has a bruised rotator cuff that could keep him out a few days, tight end Chris Manhertz banged his ribs (Ryan didn’t know the extent), and wide receiver Marquise Goodwin threw up on the field, most likely from the heat.
–Running back Bryce Brown’s chances of making the team seem to be dwindling with each fumble, of which there have been too many. Brown was known as a fumbler when the Bills acquired him prior to the 2014 season, and last season he had a critical fumble against the Kansas City Chiefs that cost him scoring a touchdown that might have put that game away. The Bills went on to lose.
In the scrimmage Saturday, Brown ripped off a pair of runs that totaled 22 yards, but on a third consecutive carry, he put the ball on the ground and the defense recovered. In Monday’s practice, Karlos Williams took a few more reps in place of Brown.
“We wanted to see Karlos,” Ryan said. “He’s starting to do a lot of good things out there, but that doesn’t mean Bryce won’t be given another opportunity. You know the fumble was disappointing, I mean to put it mildly, because he was having a nice day. You know every single team is going to be attacking that football, and quite honestly, you just can’t have it. I mean, I don’t care how many — if you carry it 300 times, you have to hold on to that sucker, and that’s what we’re counting on as a team.”
–Goodwin is in a titanic battle to make the roster, which may explain why he opted to compete in a pair of track and field events earlier this summer.
In late June, he finished fourth in the USA Track and Field Championships in the long jump, the event he competed in at the 2012 Summer Olympics. That finish wasn’t good enough to qualify him for the world championships in Beijing at the of this month. Thus, he competed in the Pan American Games in Toronto two weeks before the start of training camp, and he won the silver medal.
“It was just something I wanted to do, so I did it,” Goodwin said. “Just want to live my life how I kind of want to, within the rules of my contract and everything. Just focusing on football now, the football season, and getting ready.”
Goodwin denied that he is starting to think about a second career in case he doesn’t stick with the Bills, but he has an uphill fight with Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods, Percy Harvin, Chris Hogan, Marcus Easley and draft pick Dezmin Lewis on the depth chart.
“I’m not thinking with that mindset that football won’t work out,” Goodwin said. “I know football will work out, but if I did want to do track and field, I know I could. But right now, I want to play football.”
