Bills Fire Rex Ryan

The Bills have let go of their head coach, and his brother.

The Buffalo Bills announced Tuesday that head coach Rex Ryan and his brother, defensive coordinator Rob Ryan were both fired.

The last straw for Ryan was likely Saturday when the Bills lost to the Miami Dolphins in overtime, 34-31.

During the overtime period, Buffalo lined up with only 10 men on a long run by Miami running back Jay Ajayi which ultimately sealed the victory.

“That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen and it should never happen but it did happen,” Ryan said. “And it cost us the game. That’s how I’ll look at it.”

Ryan was asked if that run would be his defining moment in Buffalo.

“Well, I hope it isn’t, but if it is, it’s something I’ll have to live with,” he said.

In nearly two seasons, Ryan went 15-16 and couldn’t lead the Bills to the postseason as he was tasked to do.  The Buffalo passing game could never get off the ground and the defense regressed under the Ryan brothers.

This is likely Rex’s last stop as an NFL head coach, as he’s failed in spectacular fashion now in two spots.  The bravado simply hasn’t worked and has caused more criticism of Ryan than is probably deserved.  At this point, it will be difficult for an owner to sell his fanbase on Ryan until he can renovate his image possibly again as a coordinator.

Offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn will serve as the team’s interim head coach when they finish the season against the New York Jets on Sunday.
