Bills 38, Jets 3
DETROIT — Kyle Orton threw two first-half touchdown passes, and the Buffalo Bills overcame a tumultuous week and a change of venue to clobber the hapless New York Jets 38-3 Monday night at Ford Field.
The game was originally scheduled for Sunday in Orchard Park, N.Y., but was postponed and relocated when more than 5 feet of snow fell in the Buffalo area.
Orton completed 24 of 32 passes for 230 yards for the Bills (6-5), who won for the second time this season at Ford Field. Buffalo, which snapped a two-game losing streak, defeated the Detroit Lions 17-14 on Oct. 5.
Buffalo wide receiver Robert Woods caught a career-high nine passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. Running back Boobie Dixon scored on a 30-yard run and also blocked a punt. Buffalo’s defense held New York to 218 total yards and recorded seven sacks.
The Lions organization tried its best to make the Bills feel at home. The hosts even painted the Bills logo at midfield and encouraged the 56,044 fans, who got free tickets, to cheer for Buffalo.
Jets starting quarterback Michael Vick was sacked five times and intercepted once before getting pulled in the third quarter. Wide receiver Jeremy Kerley caught five passes for 66 yards for the Jets (2-9), who were coming off a bye week after breaking an eight-game losing streak with a victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Bills outscored the Jets 17-0 in the third quarter to make it a laugher.
Dan Carpenter kicked a 53-yard field goal to give Buffalo a 17-3 lead early in the third. The Bills extended their lead to 21 with 7:57 remaining in the quarter when Dixon blocked a Ryan Quigley punt and defensive end Manny Lawson recovered in the end zone.
Safety Duke Williams’ 34-yard interception return set up the Bills’ next score, running back Fred Jackson’s 5-yard run that made it 31-3.
Dixon tacked on his 30-yard scoring run up the middle midway through the fourth.
Following a short punt after the Jets’ first possession, the Bills drove 44 yards to take a quick lead. Woods caught a 16-yard pass during the drive and finished it off with a leaping 7-yard catch of a pass from Orton on third-and-goal.
Kerley’s 41-yard punt return set up the only Jets’ points of the half, Nick Folk’s 27-yard field goal late in the first quarter.
Buffalo increased its lead to 14-3 late in the half with a methodical 13-play, 90-yard drive. Sacked on the previous play, Orton finished it off when he found tight end Scott Chandler over the middle for a 19-yard touchdown with 43 seconds left. Chandler made a snow shoveling motion after his second touchdown of the season.
NOTES: Buffalo’s starting FB Frank Summers (neck), WR Marquise Goodwin (ankle) and DE Jarius Wynn (knee) missed the game.
