Bengals WR Green may return vs. Ravens
There was some potential good news on an otherwise dreary Monday at Paul Brown Stadium as Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis sounded hopeful about wide receiver A.J. Green’s chances of playing Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens.
“I think A.J.’s made a lot of progress,” Lewis said. “As we go through the week we’ll see, as always, how things go.”
Green has missed the past two games with a toe injury that also forced him to miss all but five snaps of the Sept. 14 home opener.
His absence was glaring Sunday in Indianapolis as the Bengals managed only 135 yards and one third-down conversion in a 27-0 shutout loss.
“I think he’s made significant progress and feels good about everything that he’s being told and what the prognosis is,” Lewis said. “I guess that’s probably the most important thing. It’s been a consistent message he’s gotten, and as we said earlier, the time will allow thing to progress.”
Lewis also said he thinks linebacker Emmanuel Lamur and defensive tackle Brandon Thompson will return to practice this week. Lamur injured his shoulder against Carolina and missed the Indianapolis game. Thompson hasn’t played since leaving the Atlanta game Sept. 14 with a knee injury.
–Bengals trainers confirmed Monday the injury that forced linebacker Vontaze Burfict from Sunday’s 27-0 loss at Indianapolis was a neck strain and not concussion-related.
“He’s fine,” Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said.
Burfict hurt his neck late in the first quarter while tackling Colts quarterback Andrew Luck following a 2-yard gain.
It was the third time this season an injury has forced the Pro Bowl linebacker to miss the remainder of a game. Concussions knocked him out of the first two games of the season and forced him to miss the next two.
He also left last week’s Carolina game with a blow to the head, but later returned to play a season-high 93 percent of the defensive snaps (78 of 84).
For the season, Burfict has been on the field for only 33.3 percent (157 of 474) of the snaps. Last year, he played 96 percent of the snaps (1,102 of 1,147).
