Bengals TE Eifert may not return this season
Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis provided more bad news on Friday, the day after their embarrassing 24-3 loss to the Cleveland Browns.
Lewis said that tight end Tyler Eifert, who is currently on the on injured reserve/designated for return with a dislocated right elbow suffered on Sept. 7, may not play again this season.
“I can’t give you an update until he’s close to being healthy,” Lewis said, according to NFL.com. “So he’s on the mend, he’s healing, he’s doing things, and if he gets back and healthy, and he’s going to be able to contribute and not risk further injury, then he’ll be back and out there.
“But obviously not going to risk Tyler’s future for any part of this season right now until he’s completely 100 percent healthy, to be able to do his job thoroughly.”
Lewis said there is no guarantee that Eifert will be back this season.
Eifert was the Bengals’ first-round pick in 2013, and he had 39 receptions for 445 yards and two touchdowns last season as a rookie. In the 2014 season opener against Baltimore, he caught three passes for 37 yards while playing just eight snaps before his injury.
The Bengals showed on Thursday that their passing game needs help, and the prospect of being without Eifert the rest of the season does not help.
