Bengals re-sign K Nugent
The Cincinnati Bengals re-signed kicker Mike Nugent to a two-year contract Monday.
Terms were not disclosed, but NFL.com reported that the deal is worth $4 million.
Nugent, who was due to become an unrestricted free agent Tuesday, will play his sixth Bengals season and his 11th NFL year in 2015. He holds Bengals records for most field goals (33) and points (132) in a season, set in 2011, and he shares the team mark for longest field goal (55 yards) while holding the mark for longest playoff field goal (57).
Nugent’s 57-yard field goal in last season’s playoff game at Indianapolis is the second-longest in NFL postseason history. He is 6-for-7 in his career on postseason field goals.
“I’m excited to have Mike back with us,” said special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons. “Mike dealt with some tough issues last season (including the death of his father), but he finished the year strong, and we’re looking for him to pick up where he left off. Also this means we’ll have our specialist trio back, with (snapper) Clark Harris and (holder) Kevin Huber, and keeping the continuity with those guys working as a unit is a big asset for us.”
Nugent logged the fifth 100-point season of his career in 2014. His 117-point total was his second-highest. He made 26 of 33 field-goal attempts, including 15 of his last 16. In the season-opening win at Baltimore, his five field goals in the first half tied the NFL record for field goals in a half.
Nugent also handles kickoffs, and last season he had 73 of 78 reach the end zone, with 37 touchbacks.
A second-round draft choice of the New York Jets in 2005, Nugent played four seasons with the Jets and had brief stints with Tampa Bay and Arizona before joining the Bengals as a free agent in 2010.
Nugent is the second Bengals veteran with a 2015 unrestricted free agency opportunity to re-sign with the team prior to the opening of the new league year, joining linebacker Rey Maualuga.
