Bengals may be without WR Green this week
CINCINNATI — Wide-receiver depth could be a major issue Sunday against the Carolina Panthers after Cincinnati Bengals Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Green left Wednesday’s practice on a cart after appearing to aggravate an injury to the big toe on his right foot.
Green was going through agility drills 15 minutes into practice when he stopped, removed his shoe and slammed it down in disgust.
Green was limping noticeably as he made his way to the sideline to climb aboard the cart.
Asked about Green’s status after practice, head coach Marvin Lewis simply said, “We’ll see.”
The Bengals are still without their other starting wide receiver, Marvin Jones, who injured his ankle last week in his second practice back from a broken foot that forced him to miss all of the preseason and the first four regular-season games.
If Green is unable to go against Carolina, that would leave Brandon Tate and rookie James Wright as the likely candidates to start opposite Mohamed Sanu.
Green initially injured the toe in the first quarter of the season opener against Baltimore, but he played through the pain and caught a game-winning 77-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter.
The following week against Atlanta he played just five snaps before the pain forced him from the game. Green played in both contests after that and has missed just one game in his four-year career.
Offensive coordinator Hue Jackson said he was not only unsure of Green’s availability for Sunday, he was unconcerned about it.
“I’m not worried about it,” Jackson said. “I can’t. At the end of the day, I’m never going to be worried about what’s going on with any player on our football team. I’ve just got to coach the guys who are out there and get everybody ready to play.”
In addition to Tate, a sixth-year player who has six catches for 74 yards this season, and Wright, who is still looking for his first NFL reception, the only other receiver on the active roster is Dane Sanzenbacher.
“We’ll never run out of weapons,” Jackson said. “We’ll put somebody else right up in there and let’s go.”
SERIES HISTORY: 5th regular-season meeting. Series tied, 2-2, with the Bengals winning the last two contests. The most historic meeting between these teams was on Dec. 8, 2002, when the Panthers’ Steve Smith returned two punts for touchdowns of 61 and 87 yards in a 52-31 Carolina victory. Smith returned three punts in all for 153 yards, which still stands as a single-game record for Bengals opponents.
