Bengals lose RT Smith for season
The Cincinnati Bengals placed right tackle Andre Smith on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday with a torn left triceps.
Smith suffered the injury, which was confirmed Monday with an MRI, in the Bengals’ 22-13 win over the Houston Texans on Sunday while trying to block defensive end J.J. Watt in the first quarter. He had returned to the lineup after missing two games with a sprained ankle.
To replace Smith on the roster, the Bengals signed veteran offensive tackle Jamon Meredith.
Meredith has started 24 games during a six-year NFL career. He was with the Indianapolis Colts for nine games earlier this season and played in four before he was waived on Nov. 4.
Drafted in the fifth round in 2009 by the Green Bay Packers, Meredith was reclaimed by the Packers off waivers after the Colts released him and then waived again on Nov. 15.
The Bengals’ likely replacement for Smith at right tackle is Marshall Newhouse, who held up well in relief of Smith on Sunday.
Smith’s injury-plagued season started with a concussion that limited his participation in training camp. He joins five other Bengals on season-ending IR.
