Bears WR White to sit out at start of camp

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — Chicago Bears first-round draft pick Kevin White will not practice when the team takes the field at the start of training camp because of a shin injury.

General manager Ryan Pace said White, a wide receiver, suffered the injury near the end of organized team activities in June. He did not practice with the team during minicamp, but the Bears did not reveal the nature of the injury until now.

“So we’re going to start him off on PUP to kind of build his cardiovascular endurance,” Pace said.

The injury means Eddie Royal and Marquess Wilson will get more snaps in camp across from starting receiver Alshon Jeffery.

“I think when we throw Eddie in the mix, you’ve got a real viable guy that you can move around a lot,” quarterback Jay Cutler said. “He’s got experience in the slot, he’s got experience outside.”

Cutler didn’t think White’s development would be hurt much by his absence.

“He’s picking up the offense,” Cutler said. “First and foremost, you’ve got to learn formations and then kind of build from there.

“He’s eager. He wants to do it, which is the most important part. So he’ll be fine.”

The Bears also announced that third-string quarterback David Fales would start training camp on the physically unable to perform list because of an illness.

Practices begin Thursday at Olivet Nazarene University.
