Bears Try Addition By Subtraction Trading Marshall To Jets
Find out what the Brandon Marshall trade means to the Bears and the Jets.
It’s being reported that the Chicago Bears have traded five-time Pro Bowler Brandon Marshall to the New York Jets for an undisclosed draft pick, pending Marshall passing a physical.
Marshall is due to earn $7.5 million in 2015 and has been one of the most productive receivers in football, as he caught 279 passes for 3,524 yards with 31 touchdowns in his three years with the Bears.
The former UCF Knight has been the most targeted receiver in football since 2007.
The Bears are banking on an “addition by subtraction” situation as Marshall is one of the most outspoken players in the NFL. With that said, he’s been ultra productive when healthy and it’s difficult to imagine that even with the extra cap space that the Bears offense will be better without a potential Hall of Fame talent who is only 30 years old.
From the Jets perspective, they’ve completely renovated their wide receiving corps in the last 365 days. Marshall as a true No. 1 receiver should make Eric Decker that much better, and if you add in Jeremy Kerley and a healthy Jace Amaro and either Geno Smith or whoever the Jets play at quarterback should benefit.
The trade for Marshall likely will lead to the release of wide receiver Percy Harvin, who the Jets acquired at the trade deadline last season.
From a fantasy perspective, obviously Marshall’s value takes a hit with an unknown quarterback situation, but Alshon Jeffrey’s value should increase even more as he will receive more targets from Jay Cutler or whoever the Bears decide will take snaps under center.
