Bears sign S Rolle, WR Royal
Veteran safety Antrel Rolle and wide receiver Eddie Royal signed three-year deals with the Chicago Bears.
Rolle joins a defense shifting to a 3-4 after a five-win season in which the defense gave up the most points in franchise history. New head coach John Fox has coveted veterans at the back end of his defense — in Carolina, he had Mike Minter and with the Broncos prior to last season, Fox brought in hard-hitting free agent T.J. Ward.
Rolle spent the past five seasons with the New York Giants and was first or second in tackles every year. He was drafted in the first round by the Arizona Cardinals.
General manager Ryan Pace indicated a deal was close with a safety Wednesday, when the Bears introduced $40 million acquisition Pernell McPhee.
Royal was drafted by the Denver Broncos and was a teammate of quarterback Jay Cutler when he caught 91 passes in 2008. Royal spent last season with the San Diego Chargers and had 62 catches for 778 yards and nine touchdowns.
He will likely start in Chicago. The Bears traded Brandon Marshall to the New York Jets for a fifth-round pick.
