Battle-bruised Browns reload for Jaguars
BEREA, Ohio — Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine will take a bruised and battered yet confident team into Jacksonville to face the winless Jaguars on Sunday.
Injuries to both lines, particularly on defense, has left Pettine talking about “next man up” to replace center Alex Mack and defensive end Armonty Bryant. Mack suffered a broken left fibula and Bryant torn ligaments in his right knee in the game against Pittsburgh Steelers last week.
“It’s tough,” Pettine said, referring to Mack. “It’s not just losing his play, but it’s also an emotional letdown, as well, to have a guy that just exemplified everything you’re trying to get done.
“It’s big, but at the same time I told the team, ‘We lost two warriors in him and Armonty, but when we check the mail there’s not going to be any sympathy cards from around the league.’ It’s the cliche, but it is truly next man up. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves, and I’m confident in the guys that we’ll end up either promoting or bringing somebody in. I’m confident that we’ll put a functional group out there.”
Mack never missed a game or even a snap before he was injured in the 31-10 victory over the Steelers. He snapped the ball 5,279 times in a span of 85 games since being taken with the 21st pick of the 2009 draft by former Browns coach Eric Mangini.
John Greco took over for Mack in the Pittsburgh game and will start at center in Jacksonville. Nick McDonald, currently on the non-football injury list, started practicing Wednesday and could be starting at center on Oct. 26 when the Browns host Oakland.
“We’re a mile away from making that decision,” Pettine said. “We have some options whether we keep Paul (McQuistan) at guard, whether we let Paul continue to be the swing and have (Vinston) Painter play guard. There are options.”
The bigger problem is on the defensive line because of injuries to end Phil Taylor, who had knee surgery on Oct. 6, and others. Pettine said Billy Winn might miss another week with a quadriceps injury. He is more optimistic about nose tackle Ahtyba Rubin, who missed the Pittsburgh game with a sprained ankle.
Rubin practiced Wednesday. Winn did not.
“Anytime you get an injury like that, you’re prayers go out for him,” defensive end Desmond Bryant said, referring to Armonty Bryant. “It’s going to be a long recovery for him, but I think he’ll do well with that. As far as for us, we had a couple guys go out last week and we had guys step up in the game this week. That’s what it’s going to be for next week. Somebody’s going to have to come in and try to fill his shoes as best as possible.”
The Browns put Bryant on injured reserve Tuesday. They signed Siona Fua to replace him. Fua was a 2011 third-round pick of the Carolina Panthers. He has played in 29 games – 27 with the Panthers from and two with the Broncos last season.
NOTE: Among those missing practice Wednesday were DE Phil Taylor (knee), S Tashaun Gipson (thigh) and DB K’Waun Williams (concussion).
