Barkley’s extended presence costs Cards a pick
The Sports Xchange
TEMPE, Ariz. — Quarterback Matt Barkley has been on the roster through six games, meaning the Cardinals will send their seventh-round pick to the Eagles to complete the trade that brought him to Arizona.
They traded for Barkley in early September, agreeing to part with the pick if Barkley stayed for six games.
Coach Bruce Arians said he likes what he has seen so far from Barkley.
–Quarterback Carson Palmer knows what it is like to play the Ravens, having played against them twice a year while with the Bengals.
“That’s been a great defense,” he said. “It’s been a defensive organization for a long time. They’re very well-coached. They’re really good on special teams. They’re always in it, somehow and some way. They’re always in the playoff hunt it seems, year in and year out. It’s just a very well-balanced team for as long as I’ve known them. Just a very defense-first mentality, and that’s the roots of the organization.”
–Arians wasn’t pleased with a handful of officials calls against the Pittsburgh Steelers, including when receiver Michael Floyd’s T-shirt was pulled in the end zone. Floyd could not get to the ball.
“I don’t think anybody else missed it in the stadium, other than the two guys with the striped shirts on,” Arians said.
NOTES: RB Andre Ellington looks like a player without a role right now. Chris Johnson is the No. 1 back. David Johnson is playing in short-yardage and nickel situations. Ellington had just one carry against the Steelers. … WR John Brown had 10 catches for 196 yards against the Steelers. Both totals were career highs. The yardage is the sixth most in a game in franchise history and the most since Anquan Boldin had 217 against Detroit in 2003. That was Boldin’s first NFL game. … WR Larry Fitzgerald (583 receiving yards) is on pace for his first 1,000-yard season since 2011. … TE Darren Fells (sprained left shoulder) is expected to miss two to three weeks. There are two healthy tight ends on the roster, Troy Niklas and Jermaine Gresham.
