FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Percy Harvin has managed to remain on his best behavior with the New York Jets. But the wide receiver wasn’t able to remain healthy.

Harvin’s best game in years came to a sudden halt Sunday, when he suffered an ankle injury in the fourth quarter of the Jets’ 30-24 overtime loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Before getting hurt, Harvin had six catches for 124 yards and a touchdown — his first touchdown catch since Oct. 25, 2012 — and 109 yards on four kickoff returns.

“He was the difference in the game,” coach Rex Ryan said. “He gave us a great shot with his returnability, as a receiver, everything. He was doing a tremendous job for us. Obviously we know what kind of explosive player he is. The kind of talent he has is rare.”

The fear following the game was that Harvin was done for the season, but Ryan said Monday that Harvin’s injury was to his lower ankle, which is less serious than a high ankle injury. Still, Harvin is unlikely to play against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, which means he would fail to play all 16 games in a season for the fifth time in six NFL campaigns.

Harvin was available to the Jets for a song — a conditional draft pick — in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 17 because of his fragility on the field and his combative off-field conduct, including skirmishes with players and coaches dating back to his days at the University of Florida.

The latest injury for Harvin could make it easier for the Jets to retain him on a renegotiated contract. Harvin is due $10.5 million next season, an untenable figure given his reputation and tendency to get hurt.
