Andre Johnson jets to visit Colts
Wide receiver Andre Johnson, released by the Houston Texans, made his former team’s arch nemesis his first visit in free agency Tuesday.
Johnson was on a private jet to Indianapolis to sit down with Colts owner Jim Irsay, general manager Ryan Grigson and head coach Chuck Pagano on Tuesday. The visit was first reported by NFL.com.
The Colts have a need for a veteran wide receiver after announcing Reggie Wayne would not return.
Johnson said he wants to play with a top quarterback and join a contender after 12 seasons with the Texans.
Revenge could be a dish best served with a division rival.
Johnson was asked to accept a reduced role with the Texans in 2015 after he posted just 68 receptions in Bill O’Brien’s first season as head coach in Houston. When he balked, the Texans gave him permission to seek a trade.
Knowing the next move was likely to cut Johnson, the Texans did not find any offers to their liking.
In Indianapolis Johnson would not face pressure to be a No. 1 receiver. The Colts were led in receptions by big-play speed threat T.Y. Hilton last season and the development of second-year target Donte Moncrief could give quarterback Andrew Luck an enviable collection of outside receivers.
