After bye, Romo prepares for home stretch
IRVING, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys returned from the bye healthy and ready to go for the final six games of the season, starting with a Sunday matchup against the New York Giants.
The final six games can be broken up into three and three.
The Cowboys (7-3) play three games in 12 days. They play Sunday at the Giants, host the Philadelphia Eagles on Thanksgiving Day and then play at the Chicago Bears on Dec. 4.
The best news about the bye was the rest that quarterback Tony Romo got for his fractured back. Even so, it remains to be seen how he will hold up over such a brutal three-game stretch.
Romo is only concerned about the Giants (3-7).
“Once that game is over, I’ll set up a different plan and talk to trainers and coaches, and we’ll go from there,” he said Wednesday. “But this week, it’s not about thinking about next week at all. You’ve got to get yourself ready to play in this one game and against the Giants. This is a very important game, a big game for us.”
Romo didn’t do much during the bye, and when he returned to practice Wednesday, he kept to his normal routine of sitting out practice so he won’t have to throw three consecutive days leading up to Sunday’s game.
Never mind that Romo had 10 days off since the Jacksonville Jaguars game before the bye. He will practice Thursday and Friday.
“In some ways, you’re always going to have a routine you have to do just for coming off the back surgery,” Romo said. “I’m constantly having to do the things to give me the ability to do the stuff that I want throughout the week and play in the games on Sundays. Anytime there’s another thing that’s added, (it is) a little bit more challenging. I think you just understand that, and you go and figure out a way to get it done and get yourself ready to play.”
The Cowboys changed philosophy on offense and are featuring the run rather than the pass-happy ways of past years. Even so, Romo remains key to everything they do, and he is having a great season. His 107.2 passer rating ranks second only to the 106.4 mark of the Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers.
“He’s had a really good year,” coach Jason Garrett said of Romo. “He’s responded well with the adversity with his back. We talk about being your best regardless of circumstances, whatever circumstance he’s been in, somehow he’s found a way to fight through it. He’s led our team well.
“I think he functions really well in this scheme. Any of the evolutional part in our offense has been positive. He’s embraced that. Obviously, we’re a better offensive unit around him. We’re better on the offensive line. We’re running the ball better. All of those things are good. But he’s had a huge part in orchestrating all of that.”
