49ers Select Arik Armstead 17th Overall- Full Analysis
The San Francisco 49ers are trying to rebuild a once-great defense and Arik Armstead should certainly help.
After trading down with the San Diego Chargers, the San Francisco 49ers used the 17th-overall pick in the draft to select former Oregon defensive end Arik Armstead.

“Arik Armstead is a bit of a raw talent, but he’s a big strong young man who fills an immediate need for the San Francisco 49ers. Justin Smith is likely to retire, but even if he were to return this season, the end is near for the great Niners end, and Armstead is the kind of player who can grow into his replacement. The 49ers are in a state of change, and expectations probably won’t be very high for 2015, so Armstead will have time to grow into his role. The 49ers likely had Armstead in there sites at 15, so picking up the extra picks to trade down with San Diego makes his an even better pick for San Francisco.”- Pat Donovan

“Arik Armstead reminds me of another former Duck who caused some people to scratch their heads when he was picked so early — Kyle Long. They play different sides of the line of scrimmage, but have a similar rawness — albeit one that includes a Pro Bowl-caliber ceiling.” – Alex Hickey

“The 49ers were desperate for help up front with Justin Smith reportedly on his way toward retirement and Armstead provides that in a big way. He’s powerful and explosive and has the potential to be a dominant pass rushing presence, but he’s still a little raw and will need some seasoning. San Francisco will afford him that time, as no one expects much of them coming up here soon. They probably would have taken him at 15, but happily fell back a couple spots and absorbed a fourth rounder this year and fifth next year to do so.” – Devon Jeffreys

“The 49ers had a greater need at linebacker, but they maximized value with Arik Armstead. Armstead should be a perfect 5-technique in their defense and he’ll make life easier for Aldon Smith. If the 49ers would have stayed put at No. 15, they likely would have selected Armstead, so they played the move back to perfection.”- Charlie Bernstein
