49ers retain LB Bishop
The San Francisco 49ers re-signed linebacker Desmond Bishop to a one-year contract on Tuesday.
Bishop signed with the 49ers in December and played in two games after linebacker Chris Borland went down with an ankle injury. The team is looking to fill the holes left by the sudden offseason retirements of Patrick Willis and Borland.
It’s unclear whether the 49ers will go outside to sign additional help at linebacker. According to reports, they have expressed interest in Lance Briggs, Erin Henderson and Philip Wheeler. Henderson met with the team last week and all three worked out for the 49ers on Tuesday.
In 75 career NFL games, Bishop has 319 tackles, nine sacks, seven forced fumbles, one interception and 13 passes defensed. On special teams, he has an additional 55 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
The 30-year-old Bishop was drafted by Green Bay out of Cal in the sixth round in 2007 and spent six seasons with the Packers before going to the Minnesota Vikings and then the Arizona Cardinals, who released him on Dec. 1.
