49ers reportedly add Logan as QB coach

Published

on

San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Tomsula reportedly has reached into his NFL Europe past for his quarterbacks coach.

Steve Logan, Tomsula’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2006 with the Rhein Fire, reached a two-year deal with the 49ers on Wednesday, according to WRAL-TV in Raleigh, N.C.

Logan, 61, had been out of football since 2011, working in radio and TV, including for WRAL.

Logan spent 11 years (1992-2002) as the coach at East Carolina, where he was 69-58 and coached future NFL quarterbacks Jeff Blake and David Garrard.

Logan resigned in 2002 and ended up in NFL Europe from 2004 to 2006. His Berlin Thunder quarterbacks, Dave Ragone and Rohan Davey, were offensive players of the year in the league in 2004 and 2005.

Logan returned to college football in 2007 and 2008, as coordinator of Boston College’s offense under Jeff Jagodzinski, Logan’s former offensive line coach at East Carolina.

Logan’s quarterback in 2007 was Matt Ryan, who was drafted No. 3 overall by the Atlanta Falcons in 2008.

When Jagodzinski was fired by BC after the 2008 season and Logan did not get the head-coaching job, they both ended up as offensive assistants with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under coach Raheem Morris. The entire staff was fired after the 2011 season.

The addition of Logan as QB coach leaves holdover Geep Chryst without a job — unless the 49ers plan to make him the offensive coordinator or put him in another role.

Tomsula, promoted from defensive line coach three weeks ago, still had not picked an offensive coordinator Wednesday. He reportedly was interested in Philadelphia Eagles wide receivers coach Bob Bicknell, but the Eagles reportedly had barred Bicknell from interviewing with the 49ers.
