49ers put Celek on IR, sign Tanner

The San Francisco 49ers placed tight end Garrett Celek on injured reserve with an ankle injury and signed running back Phillip Tanner on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-5, 252-pound Celek originally signed with the 49ers as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 4, 2012. He appeared in 28 games (two starts) over the past three seasons, registering eight receptions for 142 yards.

Celek was placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list on Aug. 25 and was later activated from the list on Nov. 27. He appeared in three games (one start) this season and registered two receptions for 53 yards.

The 5-10, 208-pound Tanner was originally signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent on July 28, 2011. In three seasons with Dallas, Tanner appeared in 39 games and registered 56 carries for 149 yards and two touchdowns, as well as nine receptions for 93 yards. He also added 21 special teams tackles.

Tanner, 26, signed with the Indianapolis Colts on July 29 and was later released on Aug. 20. He returned to the Cowboys on Aug. 28 and was released on Aug. 30. Tanner then signed with the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 21, and was inactive for three games before being released on Nov. 20.
