49ers’ Kaepernick ignores Sherman’s taunts

Published

on

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The last time San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw a pass against the Seattle Seahawks, it could have sent San Francisco to the Super Bowl.

Instead, Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman’s deflected the ball to teammate Malcolm Smith, and the linebacker’s interception sent the 49ers into a nightmarish offseason and the Seahawks to the Super Bowl.

The lowlight? Having to hear Sherman question Kaepernick’s decision to challenge him with the most important pass of the season.

Kaepernick avoided a war of words with Sherman when asked Monday for his view of the All-Pro cornerback.

“I don’t have any,” he responded. “I’m worried about what we’re doing.”

Will he challenge Sherman again Thursday night, when the 49ers play a Thanksgiving game against the visiting Seahawks?

“I’ll throw to whoever’s open,” Kaepernick said.

In a January interview, Sherman taunted Kaepernick regarding the decisive postseason play and more.

“(Kaepernick) thought that was gonna be a touchdown, too,” Sherman said. “That would have been his third touchdown in three years against the Seattle Seahawks. So that would have been a feat. …

“But it was his seventh interception against the Seattle Seahawks. And once again, at the end of the game — trying to throw a fade to (wide receiver Michael) Crabtree — it’s like, two years in a row, your season ends the same way. You would think he would learn.”

Sherman was referring, in part, to Kaepernick throwing to Crabtree three straight times, all incomplete, late in the 49ers’ Super Bowl XLVII loss to the Baltimore Ravens in February 2013.

However, that was then. Now, based on the past 11 games, Kaepernick’s most targeted player is wide receiver Anquan Boldin, who leads the 49ers with 65 catches for 825 yards and four touchdowns.

Crabtree has 48 catches for 567 yards and four touchdowns. He was targeted 83 times, and he had several conspicuous drops in the past few games. Boldin’s 65 grabs came on 95 targets. This trend is also noted in first-down catches, where Boldin has 45 to Crabtree’s 25.

It will be interesting to see who covers whom and who is targeted when the 49ers have the ball.

Although Sherman is known for being talkative, Boldin’s quiet, tough-guy demeanor doesn’t seem to invite extraneous chatter from defenders — or anybody.

Here are a few more factoids, both positive and negative, for the 49ers and their fans to consider heading into the big Thanksgiving game:

-Boldin is coming off a 137-yard receiving effort in Sunday’s win over the Washington Redskins. He also had 93-, 94- and 95-yard outings in his previous five games. Meanwhile, the Seahawks have allowed only two wideouts to top 80 yards in the past seven games.

–Running back Frank Gore rushed for 131 and 110 yards in the 49ers’ past two home games against Seattle. The 49ers won both games. Gore has rushed for 1,364 yards in his career against the Seahawks, his highest total against any opponent.

–Vernon Davis is in a big-time slump, but that hasn’t prevented him from becoming the No. 1 tight end in 49ers history in number of catches. His three receptions Sunday against Washington pushed his career total to 418. Davis hasn’t caught more than three passes in a game since opening day, a game in which he scored his only two touchdowns of the season. He is the team’s No. 5 receiver with 21 catches (40 targets) for 197 yards and two touchdowns

–Wide receiver Bruce Ellington is unlikely to return from his ankle injury Thursday against Seattle. The club’s top punt and kickoff return man missed the club’s last two games. The 49ers worked out return specialist Trindon Holliday on Monday in hopes of upgrading over Carlos Hyde (kickoff) and Perrish Cox (punt). The club decided against signing Holliday.

–Tight end Vance McDonald was limited in practice Tuesday as he attempts to fight off a back injury that kept him out of Sunday’s game against Washington, but the 49ers hope to have him on the field Thursday.

–Offensive tackle Anthony Davis has been unable to shake a concussion he sustained Nov. 16 against the New York Giants and is unlikely to play Thursday against Seattle. Davis did not practice Tuesday.

–Nose tackle Glenn Dorsey almost surely will not play because of a forearm injury that also kept him out of Sunday’s win over the Redskins.

–Inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman, whose unrewarded heroics (forced fumble, recovery that was not recognized) caused the NFL to change rules on reviews, was projected by some to make his season debut Thursday against Seattle. That won’t happen, as he has yet to practice with the team during his rehabilitation from knee surgery.
