49ers’ Harbaugh getting up-close look at his next team Sunday?
With Jim Harbaugh under contract with the San Francisco 49ers through the 2015 season, almost surely the Oakland Raiders will not be able to interview him should they be interested in pursuing Harbaugh as their fulltime replacement for Dennis Allen this offseason.
But thanks to the NFL schedule-maker, nobody can stop the Raiders from getting an up-close-and-personal look-see at the in-demand coach on their home field this weekend.
That’s right. When the 49ers visit the Raiders for a Week 14 matchup Sunday, Harbaugh just might find himself standing with his red-and-gold-clad squad on the east sideline, wondering if the Raiders might benefit from changing sides of the field next season.
After all, that’s one of the first things he did at Stanford upon getting the job there.
Alas, the Raiders have far greater issues at this point than Stanford had in 2007, and that’s why, according to numerous reports, they might be interested in making a deal to acquire Harbaugh before the start of next season.
The matchup with the Raiders has given the media carte blanche to ask Harbaugh about the Raiders this week. Some questions have been well received; others have been deemed out of bounds.
For example, the following question didn’t even warrant a “no comment” from the 49ers coach: “Can you confirm which of the two teams you’ll be coaching Sunday?”
Harbaugh didn’t answer.
In the wake of what the team owner labeled an “embarrassing” performance in a 19-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Thanksgiving, Harbaugh has been in no mood to joke around with the media this week.
“I kind of think some of these questions are for your own pleasure,” he blurted with a Ray Lewis-type stare. “Something on the ballgame?”
The Raiders are 1-11, someone reminded Harbaugh. He didn’t smile.
Later on, he was asked to identify two things the Raiders do well.
“They’re a very physical football team up front (and) they do a great job of running to the football,” he replied. “Two things.”
Nobody asked if he knew on which side of the field is the Raiders’ sideline. He’ll find out Sunday.
But if anybody interviews him on the field, it’ll be from the FOX broadcast crew.
Pay attention. His answers no doubt will be short.
SERIES HISTORY: 13th regular-season meeting. Series tied, 6-6. The San Francisco Bay Area rivals haven’t met in the regular season since Oct. 17, 2010, a game the 49ers won 17-9 in San Francisco. It was the 49ers’ third consecutive win over their rivals to square the all-time series. It has been so long since they’ve met in Oakland … the Raiders were two months from making a Super Bowl appearance when they were beaten by the 49ers 23-20 in overtime on Nov. 3, 2002. Actually, the 49ers’ win in Oakland was not unusual in the series. The team crossing the San Francisco Bay Bridge has gone 7-5 in the 12 head-to-heads.
NOTES: RB Carlos Hyde wore a no-contact blue jersey at practice Wednesday because of a shoulder ailment. The injury is not considered to be serious, and Hyde is expected to play Sunday. … WR Michael Crabtree took it easy at practice Wednesday as he deals with a minor knee injury. He has not missed any playing time because of the injury and is expected to be a fulltime participant Sunday at Oakland. … OT Joe Staley missed practice Wednesday because of an illness. Harbaugh expects the veteran back at practice later this week. .. OT Anthony Davis is close to passing the league’s protocol for concussions and is expected to return to action Sunday after a two-week absence. Davis worked out in the weight room during practice Wednesday, attempting to complete the final stage in the NFL concussion protocol. He might be able to return to practice Thursday.
–ILB NaVorro Bowman is not expected to practice with the 49ers this week, coach Jim Harbaugh indicated Monday. The 49ers have until Dec. 9 to add Bowman to their 53-man active roster or declare him out for the season. The club had hoped to assess him on the field before making the decision, but that now appears unlikely. Bowman has not played this year after undergoing major knee surgery at the end of last season.
