49ers dismiss reports of rift with Harbaugh

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Hours before San Francisco played Sunday afternoon against the Kansas City Chiefs, the 49ers’ soap opera regarding coach Jim Harbaugh’s future took a few more twists and turns.

On FOX’s NFL pregame show, Jay Glazer said this would be Harbaugh’s final season with the 49ers.

“I don’t see any way Jim Harbaugh comes back next year as the head coach of the 49ers,” Glazer said, “even if they hoist the Lombardi (Trophy as Super Bowl champions).”

Niners chief executive officer Jed York responded on Twitter to the growing controversy and reports that Harbaugh lost the support of many players.

“Jim is my coach,” York wrote. “We are trying to win a SB (Super Bowl), not a personality or popularity contest. Any more questions?”

Harbaugh’s response?

“My destiny lies between these walls with these men,” Harbaugh said hours later after the 49ers’ 22-17 victory over Kansas City.

Earlier in the day on his Facebook page, ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote: “Team sources believe Harbaugh began to lose some of his players when he was not honest with (former 49ers quarterback Alex) Smith about San Francisco’s pursuit of former Colts quarterback Peyton Manning (after the 2011 season).

“Smith specifically asked Harbaugh about it and did not get an answer that matched the facts of the situation, in which Harbaugh flew to North Carolina to meet and work out Manning. As one team source said, ‘That was the first big sign to the players that they couldn’t trust Jim.'”

Many of Harbaugh’s players took issue with reports that Harbaugh has a problem in the locker room.

“I love coach Harbaugh,” quarterback Colin Kaepernick said. “I’d go to war with him any day of the week. He’s a competitor. He wants to win. He’s going to do anything he can to put the team in position to win.”

Placekicker Phil Dawson, who made five field goals Sunday, said the 49ers have “zero problems” in the locker room.

“The team is completely unified,” Dawson said. “We believe in our coach, love playing for him. All this noise, honestly I don’t understand it. It’s certainly not the read I get. I see a bunch of committed guys who believe in their coach, playing hard.

“Look at our last two victories, just come right down to the wire. Guys are giving everything they’ve got, so that’s certainly not consistent with some of the noise you’re hearing outside of the locker room.”

Offensive tackle Joe Staley said there is no drama in the locker room.

“It’s all created by you guys,” Staley said of the media. “We seriously don’t think about that, talk about that or give that any thought.”

Despite the continuing reports of friction between Harbaugh, the players and the team’s front office, the 49ers (3-2) beat the Philadelphia Eagles last week before knocking off the Chiefs.

“The football team has done good, and the better you do, then the more people try to trip you up,” Harbaugh said. “Whether you’re getting praised, whether you’re getting criticized, whether it’s silence, all three have their obstacles.

“All three have things that have to be addressed. But also any of the three can add to the competitiveness, add to the determination. And our football team is very determined and very competitive.”
