49ers CEO denies Harbaugh on his way out

San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York denied in a television interview on Monday that Jim Harbaugh is on his way out as the 49ers head coach after this season.

“It’s categorically not true,” York said on The Rich Eisen Show. “I mean, Jim’s our coach. I said it clearly yesterday.”

York says the relationship between Harbaugh and general manager Trent Baalke is “very professional” and the results speak for themselves. And York doesn’t believe Harbaugh wants to leave.”

NFL Network had reported that Harbaugh would not be back with the 49ers next season as a result of discord with players and team officials.

“In terms of that sustainability, every coach will move on at some point, and I don’t think Jim is at that point,” York said in the interview. “We’ve had a great relationship here, we’ve had three pretty successful seasons so far, and by 49ers standards, unless you’re holding the Lombardi Trophy up, it’s not truly a successful season, and I think we all know that and understand that.”

York did not deny that Harbaugh might need some “angst” and “tension” to perform at his best.

“I think that’s pretty fair to say. That’s how Jim is. Jim competes at anything and everything he does,” York said. “That sometimes rubs people the wrong way, but he has an amazing way to be able to pull people together, and find a way to go win tough football games, put himself in a position to have his team have the most success.”

Harbaugh said at his weekly news conference on Monday that he had talked to York.

“Jed stopped by today, we had a real good talk and keep moving forward, moving on to the [St. Louis] Rams and continue, everybody in the organization is doing their job,” Harbaugh said. “Everybody is working hard at the craft of helping us be the best we can possibly be as a football team and that’s all you can ask of anybody. They’re doing their best and nobody appreciates that like I do and I know that’s what Jed appreciates.”
