49ers beef up OL, sign Pears
The San Francisco 49ers signed former Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Erik Pears to a two-year contract, the team announced Tuesday.
Financial details were not disclosed by the team, but the deal is for a reported $4.7 million with $1 million guaranteed. According to the National Football Post, Pears will receive a base salary of $1.45 million both years and a signing bonus of $500,000.
The 6-foot-8, 316-pound Pears started all 16 games each of the past two seasons at right guard for the Bills after playing right tackle the previous three years.
Pears is expected to compete for a starting spot at left guard with 2014 third-round draft pick Brandon Thomas after Mike Iupati left the 49ers last week to sign with the Arizona Cardinals. Thomas missed his rookie season with a torn ACL.
Pears, 32, began his career as an undrafted free agent with the Denver Broncos in 2005 and has played in 101 games, including 86 starts, for the Broncos, Oakland Raiders and Bills.
