It is still early, but that doesn’t stop us at Football Insiders from look ahead to the 2016 NFL draft. We don’t know who will and who won’t declare, but at the moment it looks like an extremely deep draft class with depth through and rare talent at the top.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at an early projection of the 2016 NFL draft.

Football Outsiders’ 2015 season projections were used for the draft order.

1. Washington Redskins – QB, Christian Hackenberg, Penn State –

The premier quarterback prospect entering the 2015 college football season, Hackenberg could be an apt replacement for Robert Griffin III, if he doesn’t live up to expectations this year. Hackenberg does have some obstacles in his way as James Franklin’s offense isn’t well equipped to get a budding star at quarterback ready for the NFL.

2. Cleveland Browns – QB, Jared Goff, Cal –

Nibbling at Hackenberg’s heels for the No. 1 quarterback in this draft class is California’s Jared Goff. He is probably the most accurate quarterback as he routinely places the ball in supreme spots to give his receivers the best opportunity to make a play. He also has good pocket mobility and he doesn’t get scared off by pressure. His arm strength is a big question mark, but he has loads of potential.

3. Oakland Raiders – OT, Ronnie Stanley, Notre Dame –

If he had entered the 2015 draft, Ronnie Stanley would have likely been the first offensive tackle taken and there is no reason he shouldn’t be the first taken in 2016. As a tackle, Stanley has it all; he can mirror speed-rushers and anchor anchor against power. He is a road grader in the run game and he could fit into any scheme. Stanley may be one of the top two players in this draft.

4. Tennessee Titans – CB, Vernon Hargreaves III, Florida –

The Tennessee Titans need some help in the secondary and Vernon Hargreaves III is the man for the job. From a pure coverage perspective, Hargreaves is unrivaled in college football. He has fluid hips and he can press extremely well. He had a lot of trouble against Amari Cooper, but so did every other cornerback in college football. One more year of development should allow Hargreaves to reach new heights.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – DL, Joey Bosa, Ohio State –

Joey Bosa is the best player in the 2016 NFL draft as it stands today. He can rush the passer and play the run extremely well. He is incredibly strong at the point of attack and he mirrors that with great hand technique. He struggles to really bend the edge, but his ability to play with power more than makes up for it.

6. Jacksonville Jaguars – LB, Myles Jack, UCLA –

Eric Kendricks was the best linebacker in the 2015 draft and his teammate Myles Jack may be even better. Jack has incredible football intelligence and he applies it extremely well on the football field. He knows how to read and diagnose plays and he thrives in coverage. Jack has played a lot as a running back as well, but he is a fantastic linebacker, who has the potential to become an elite player in the NFL.

7. New York Jets – QB, Gunner Kiel, Cincinnati

One of the two wildcard quarterbacks in the 2016 draft class, Gunner Kiel has all the tools you want in a quarterback. He has the arm strength, accuracy and pocket presence to thrive. He needs to become more consistent and show more applied football intelligence to elevate his stock even more. If he does, he could vie for the No. 1 quarterback spot in this draft class.

8. St. Louis Rams – WR, Laquon Treadwell, Ole Miss –

The St. Louis Rams are starved of talent at the wide receiver position, but Laquon Treadwell could be the answer to their prayers. He plays the game a lot like Dez Byrant as he has the passion and he exhibits the physical dominance that made Bryant so great. Treadwell is coming off a gruesome injury, but if he can return to his old form, he deserves to be a top-10 pick.

9. Arizona Cardinals – QB, Cardale Jones, Ohio State –

The talk of college football, Cardale Jones has an opportunity to make himself a ton of money this season. Everyone knows he has a rocket arm and he is a physically imposing quarterback; however, teams will want to see him consistently make good decisions and get a better understanding of his football intelligence. Much like Kiel, Jones could put himself in the conversation for the quarterback in this draft.

10. Minnesota Vikings – OT, Laremy Tunsil, Ole Miss –

After Stanley, there are numerous offensive tackles vying for the No. 2 spot in the class. He may be coming off a leg injury, but Laremy Tunsil should be the favorite to go No. 2. He dominated a very good player in Preston Smith last year and he showed that he was consistently dominant throughout the season. Tunsil needs to prove that he didn’t lose his lateral mobility after the injury, but if he does, he can be a premier left tackle in the NFL.

11. Carolina Panthers – OT, Germain Ifedi, Texas A&M

Germain Ifedi is the next in a long line of great tackle prospects in the 2016 class. It really comes down to what flavor you like and the Panthers may end up liking Ifedi. He is a giant player with long arms who is extremely tough to get around. Unlike most Texas A&M tackles, Ifedi is a physical player who can create movement in the running game. Ifedi would be a great tackle to go with Daryl Williams, which should improve the Panthers offensive line a ton.

12. Chicago Bears – DL, Robert Nkemdiche, Ole Miss –

Robert Nkemdiche may be the most talented player in this draft class, but he has yet to put it all together on a consistent basis. He shows the quickness, power and hand technique that make you fall in love, but he also loafs quite a bit and doesn’t take advantage of all the opportunities given to him. If he can become more consistent, Nkemdiche may battle Joey Bosa for the best defensive prospect in this draft.

13. San Francisco 49ers – DL, DeForest Buckner, Oregon –

Shawn Oakman gets all the hype, but DeForest Buckner is the best tall, hulking defensive lineman in this draft class. Buckner’s motor seems to be always running hot and he plays with good leverage despite his tall stature. He in a dynamic player against the run, but he combines it with an underrated ability to get after the quarterback. Buckner’s teammate Arik Armstead went to San Francisco in in 2015, but Buckner is a much better player and should make a huge impact from his rookie year on.

14. Detroit Lions – DL, A’Shawn Robinson, Alabama –

The Detroit Lions need to fin a way to replace Ndamukong Suh’s production and A’Shawn Robinson would be a great start. Robinson is an impressive athlete who can plug up gaps or getting upfield and disrupt the offense in the backfield. He has been consistently productive and he should make a lot of plays in the NFL.

15. Houston Texans – QB, Connor Cook, Michigan State –

Another quarterback who may warrant first-round consideration is Michigan State’s Connor Cook. He is a very accurate passer and he can make all throws. He needs to be more composed in the pocket and deal with pressure much better if he wants to succeed in the NFL. The Texans need a legitimate starting quarterback and they may look Cook’s way to fill that void.

16. Buffalo Bills – DL, Chris Jones, Miss State –

Chris Jones is another defender on Mississippi State’s fantastic defensive line. He is a great upfield penetrator and he could move into Kyle Williams’ role with the Buffalo Bills. Jones does a great job hand fighting and he is quietly nuanced with the way he gets off blocks. Jones would be a great chess piece of head coach Rex Ryan to use for the Bills defense.

17. Cincinnati Bengals – EDGE, Emmanuel Ogbah, Oklahoma St.

Even though this edge-defender class isn’t as stacked as last year, Emmanuel Ogbah is a very good defensive end with potentially elite pass-rushing ability. He was a flash player for the most part last year, but if he becomes more consistent he will wreck havoc on opponents all year.

18. Pittsburgh Steelers – OT, Jack Conklin, Michigan State –

Jack Conklin is an extremely talented offensive tackle with great movement skills and power to thrive in the Steelers’ offense. Conklin can create movement off the line of scrimmage and he could make blocks in space. He works to the second level extremely well and he can move laterally and perform reach and cut off blocks well.

19. Philadelphia Eagles – S, Su’a Cravens, USC –

Chip Kelly loves PAC-12 players and Su’a Cravens may be one of, if not the, most talented defenders in that conference. Cravens has ability to play safety or linebacker as he has elite cover and movement skills. He can read and diagnose from both positions and he always makes plays. Cravens would be an immense upgrade in the Eagles secondary from day one.

20. San Diego Chargers – LB, Jaylon Smith, Notre Dame –

Notre Dame’s defense was disappointing last year, but linebacker Jaylon Smith certainly wasn’t. He is an extremely athletic linebacker who can make plays from sideline to sideline. He is a tackling machine and can cover extremely well too. He makes a ton of plays and he could challenge Myles Jack for the No. 1 linebacker in this class.

21. New Orleans Saints – CB, Kendall Fuller, Virginia Tech –

With his NFL bloodlines, Kendall Fuller should be more ready to make an impact in the NFL than others. His brothers have both done extremely well in the NFL, but the littlest of three, Kendall, may be the most talented of the bunch. He has great movement skills and incredible ball skills as well. He would be a great addition to the Saints defense.

22. New York Giants – RB, Ezekiel Elliott, Ohio State –

Ezekiel Elliot burst onto the scene this year as he helped propel Ohio State to a national championship in 2015. He is a bruising running back who wears down defenses with his physical running style. He isn’t just a bruiser though, as he can outrun pursuit angles to go along with some nifty elusiveness. Elliot is the premier running back in this class and would be a welcome addition to the Giants offense.

23. Baltimore Ravens – EDGE, Shawn Oakman, Baylor –

If there was ever a player that personifies the planet theory, it is Baylor’s Shawn Oakman. He is a hulking presence on the defensive line and he makes plays based on physical dominance alone. He lacks the experience to develop the nuances of the game, but there just aren’t many people that walk the earth who are as physically gifted as Oakman.

24. Kansas City Chiefs – S, Jalen Ramsey, FSU –

While Florida State’s defensive leaders were being mediocre, Jalen Ramsey was make plays all last year. He saved Florida State on multiple occasions with his playmaking ability. Ramsey could play safety or cornerback because of his elite movement skills and instincts at both positions. He would be able to replace Eric Berry and bring back the playmaking presence in the secondary.

25. Atlanta Falcons – LB, Scooby Wight, Arizona

Scooby Wright was the best defensive player in college football last year as he consistently made tremendous plays for Arizona’s defense. Wright doesn’t have the size that you would want in a linebacker, but he more than makes up for it with instincts and savviness. He will in evidently get knocked for his lack of size, but some team will prosper, because Wright has the talent of a top-15 pick.

26. Indianapolis Colts – RB, Derrick Henry, Alabama –

While Elliot is the most talented running back in this draft class, Derrick Henry is the most physically gifted. Henry shared snaps with T.J. Yeldon last year and he made the most of each one. He is a huge running back who has incredible speed and power. He needs to be more patient on his runs, but his physical gifts are undeniable.

27. Green Bay Packers – EDGE, Noah Spence, Eastern Kentucky –

The wild card of the first round is Eastern Kentucky’s Noah Spence. He was on track to be a top-10 pick, until various events led to him transferring to Eastern Kentucky early this year. From an on field perspective, Spence is an incredible talent rushing the passer and he will likely rack up gaudy stats this year at Eastern Kentucky.

28. Denver Broncos – LB, Darron Lee, Ohio State –

Darron Lee is an elite playmaker as an outside linebacker and he would fit in extremely well as a “Will” linebacker in the Broncos defense. He has elite instincts and he may be the most athletic linebacker in this draft. He needs to get off blocks better, but he athleticism makes up for it.

29. Miami Dolphins – DL, Sheldon Day, Notre Dame

An underrated interior defensive lineman, Sheldon Day, would be a great addition to the Dolphins’ defensive line rotation. Day is an upfield penetrator who wins with quickness and hand technique. He has a fantastic motor and he could be a great interior pass-rusher in the NFL.

30. Dallas Cowboys – RB, Corey Clement, Wisconsin –

The Cowboys failed to address the running back position in 2015, so they will likely look to fill that void in 2015. Even though it was in a limited role, Corey Clement was a fantastic running back for Wisconsin in 2014. He is an explosive player with great elusiveness to make the most out of runs. If he can prove he can carry the load, Clement could be a surprise contender for the end of the first round.

31. Seattle Seahawks – DL, Anthony Zettel, Penn State –

The Seattle Seahawks love flexible defensive lineman who can multiple positions, which is exactly what Anthony Zettel does. He is on the ground way too much, but he is a great disruptor who can play inside or on the edge. He gets up the field extremely well and he displays a variety of pass-rush moves. Zettel would improve their defensive line and give them another player in the Michael Bennet mold.
