2015 NFL Draft: Wake Forest Pro Day draws crowd for Johnson

Published

on

There were 23 NFL scouts and executives present at Wake Forest’s Pro Day on Monday, including four members of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

General manager Kevin Colbert, defensive backs coach Carnell Lake, player personnel coordinator Dan Rooney, Jr. and pro personnel coordinator Brandon Hunt attended the workout, which featured Demon Deacons cornerback Kevin Johnson, a potential first round pick.

Three other clubs – the Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans – also sent their defensive backs coaches to watch the workout.

Johnson largely sat on the results of his workout two weeks ago at the Combine in Indianapolis, though he did “look fantastic in positional drills other than a couple of drops,” according to a veteran scout who attended the Pro Day.

The source also noted that Johnson elected not to participate in the bench press, the only drill that he did not complete in Indianapolis.

The bench press isn’t considered a critical test for cornerbacks, though some have concerns about the strength and stamina of the 6-foot, 188-pound Johnson. It should be noted that Johnson signed with Wake Forest at just 154 pounds and has never missed a game due to injury, despite starting 41 games over his career.

Johnson’s other numbers are very impressive, especially his 3.89-second short shuttle and 6.79-second time in the 3-cone drill, each of which ranked among the quickest among all cornerbacks tested this year. Johnson also was clocked at 4.52 seconds in the 40-yard dash and posted a 41.5-inch vertical jump and a 10’10” broad jump.

Johnson may lack the bulk and strength some clubs prefer but his athleticism and natural cover skills are clear. He currently ranks third on NFLDraftScout.com’s cornerback rankings and projects as a top 45 pick.
