2015 NFL Draft: Hundley ‘smooth’ at UCLA pro day
Assuming Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota are off the board quickly, who will be the third quarterback drafted (and when) in the 2015 NFL Draft?
UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley had his closing argument on Tuesday, throwing the ball in front of a large contingent of NFL teams at the Bruins’ pro day. And according to one scout in attendance, he was “on point and smooth” during his passing session, showing off footwork and plenty of arm strength to make every NFL throw.
With his physical skillset, Hundley was expected to be at his best during a scripted throwing exercise, but the next-level questions are tough to simulate at a pro day, most notably his questionable pocket presence and vision. NFL teams have been impressed with the way Hundley carries himself and although Mariota receives the “squeaky clean” label from most, front office execs consider Hundley on the same level in regards to his extraordinary character.
The scout in attendance also pointed out that he thinks Hundley will need time to sit before he’s ready for NFL snaps. And his college head coach agrees that Hundley isn’t quite ready.
“I think he’s ready for the NFL, I don’t know that he’s ready to go in and start in the NFL,” UCLA head coach Jim Mora said on the NFL Network. “I think if he can find the right situation where he can go in and learn and have a couple years to work on his craft – because he will work on it, his work ethic is off the charts, character is off the charts – if he can get himself in the right situation where he’s not thrown right into the starting line-up, then I think he can be a very productive NFL player.”
Hundley, who is currently rated as NFLDraftScout.com’s No. 3 quarterback, could be drafted anywhere from the late first to the third round, but he doesn’t think much about where he will be drafted.
“You can’t be worried about where you’re going to go, where you’re going to get drafted or who is doing what,” Hundley said after his workout on Tuesday. “You have to worry about yourself and I think that’s what it comes down to. I’m trying to be as good as I can for whatever team picks me.”
Other notes from UCLA’s pro day:
— Pass rusher Owa Odighizuwa performed drills at defensive end and standing up at linebacker and attracted a lot of attention. He was considered a mid-to-late first round pick by NFL teams prior to the draft process with the one caveat being his medical reports. The only aspect of Odighizuwa’s draft evaluation that could keep him out of the first round is long-term durability concerns.
— Linebacker Eric Kendricks was forced to stand on his NFL Scouting Combine 40-yard dash numbers because of a nagging hamstring injury that he strained running at Lucas Oil Stadium. He did perform positional drills at UCLA’s pro day, showing well and cementing his status as a top 50 prospect. Kendricks recorded a 4.61 40-yard dash, 38-inch vertical and 10-feet-4 broad jump at the Combine.
— Junior defensive tackle Ellis McCarthy was down one pound (337) from the Combine and stood on his times from Indianapolis. Exclusively a defensive player at UCLA, McCarthy worked out on both offense and defense on Tuesday for scouts.
