2015 NFL Draft: Good and Bad Fits in the Fifth Round
Find out which picks were good fits and bad fits in the 5th round of the 2015 NFL draft.
The 2015 NFL draft has come and gone; therefore, it is time to analyze each pick with excruciating detail. As is the case every year, there are picks that are perceived as bad fits and others that are perceived as good fits. With that in mind, let’s take a look a couple of the picks that look to be good fits and some that appear to be bad fits.
Good Fits
Grady Jarrett – Atlanta Falcons
One of the more puzzling falls during the draft was Grady Jarrett falling all the way to the fifth round. Jarrett is a spark plug in the middle of the defense and he is a true upfield penetrator. Jarrett can bring an interior pass rush and he can knife into the backfield against the run. The Atlanta Falcons were the one team smart enough to cash in on this type of talent and he will make their defense much better for it.
Brett Hundley – Green Bay Packers
Brett Hundley was a polarizing prospect entering the draft; however, everyone agreed that he needed to sit for a while so that he could clean up his deficiencies. He will get to do just that with the Green Bay Packers behind Aaron Rodgers. Hundley is an extremely athletic quarterback who has the arm strength, poise and intelligence to be great. Whether it’s by a trade or Hundley eventually taking over for Rodgers down the road, the Packers will cash in big on this pick.
Kenny Bell – Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Kenny Bell isn’t an impressive specimen, but he is a darn good football player. Bell is one of the best run-blocking receivers in the draft and he gives the Buccaneers a fantastic special teamer. Furthermore, Bell has the potential to develop into a legitimate No. 2 wide receiver with the Buccaneers. He will likely battle for the No. 3 receiver job this year and he could really grow with Jameis Winston and become a valuable target for him down the road.
Bad Fits
Keith Mumphery – Houston Texans
The Houston Texans went into this draft looking to improve their receiver corps, but Keith Mumphery was not the player to do that for them. The Texans would have been much better if they went with a player like Tre McBride, who can develop into a No. 1 receiver. Mumphery is a play whose ceiling is liking a No. 3 or 4 receiver and a guy who makes an impact of special teams.
Michael Burton – Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions lost their fullback, Jed Collins, in free agency and they looked to fill that void with Michael Burton in the fifth round. However, Burton isn’t the type of player who will make a great impact as fullback because he is a below-average blocker as a fullback. He is a much better H-back type, but even if the Lions drafted him for that reason, there were much better options still on the board. The Lions failed to maximize their value with Burton in the fifth round.
