2015 Mock Draft-Post Senior Bowl Edition
Check inside to see who your team may draft in April.
1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2014 record: 2-14 (.486 strength of schedule)
Pick: Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State
The Buccaneers are in desperate need of good quarterback play and Jameis Winston is the most talented quarterback in the draft. The Bucs will have to come to grips with Winston’s off-field issues, but in between the lines he is a great talent. He has experience running a pro-style scheme and he has shown the ability to make checks at the line of scrimmage. Winston could be the piece to turn the Bucs into a playoff contender in a few years.
2. Tennessee Titans 2014 record: 2-14 (.506)
Pick: Leonard Williams, DT, USC
The Titans could use a quarterback, but Leonard Williams is too good of a value to pass up here. Williams would be a great compliment to Jurrell Casey and quickly turn the Titans defensive line into one of the best in the league. Williams utilizes leverage better than any other prospect in the draft to go along with incredible strength and deceptive quickness. Williams is the best player in the draft and it would be difficult for the Titans to pass on him.
3. Jacksonville Jaguars 2014 record: 3-13 (.514)
Pick: Randy Gregory, DE, Nebraska
The Jaguars need an influx of talent at numerous positions and who better than to take than possibly the most talented player in the draft, Randy Gregory. The Jaguars were unable to get much production at the LEO spot this year; however, that would change if they brought Gregory under the fold. Gregory is at his best when he is attacking upfield and trying to cause havoc in the backfield, which is exactly what the Leo does.
4. Oakland Raiders 2014 record: 3-13 (.570)
Pick: Dante Fowler, DE, Florida
The Raiders could go wide receiver here, but that goes against Reggie McKenzie’s drafting record to this point. Therefore, the Raiders should focus on upgrading the defensive line to take some of the pressure off Khalil Mack. With Williams and Gregory off the board, Dante Fowler may be the next best option. Fowler has a high motor to go with very good athletic traits. Fowler and Mack would make life tough on the AFC West’s quarterback for years to come.
5. Washington Redskins 2014 record: 4-12 (.496)
Pick: Alvin “Bud” Dupree, DE, Kentucky
The Redskins are in desperate need of a free safety who is adept in coverage; however, there aren’t any of those types of players worthy of a pick this high. Therefore, the Redskins should turn their efforts to improving their pass rush. Alvin “Bud” Dupree is the best fit left on the board and he would give a considerable boost to Washington’s pass rush. Dupree is a fantastic athlete who intertwines effort with athletic ability, which is a recipe for success.
6. New York Jets 2014 record: 4-12 (.543)
Pick: Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
The Geno Smith experiment has not gone well and with a new coaching staff coming in, it is likely that they will want to bring in their own quarterback. Marcus Mariota is a very talented quarterback who showcases a ton of NFL traits. However, it would be best for his development and the Jets’ long-term goals if he sat for a year and learned the nuances of playing in a pro-style offense.
7. Chicago Bears 2014 record: 5-11 (.529)
Pick: Landon Collins, S, Alabama
The Bears were unable to get any productivity out of their safeties last year; therefore, they should be looking to upgrade the position this offseason. If they opt to go the way of the draft, Landon Collins may be an option. Collins isn’t the best coverage safety in the draft, but he is extremely productive in the box and he knows how to fill against the run.
8. Atlanta Falcons 2014 record: 6-10 (.482)
Pick: Shane Ray, DE, Missouri
The Falcons are in desperate need of a pass-rusher and there have been whispers that they are extremely interested in Shane Ray. He has his troubles against the run and he is a bit of a one-trick pony as a rusher, but that one trick he does is incredible. Ray’s value would be best in the late-first or early-second round, but the Falcons may be the team to fall in love with Ray’s explosive pass rush off the edge.
9. New York Giants 2014 record: 6-10 (.512)
Pick: Shaq Thompson, OLB, Washington
The Giants have the worst linebacker unit in the NFC East and this is their opportunity to change that. Shaq Thompson doesn’t have the ideal size that the Giants look for, but he has incredible ball skills and playmaking ability. Thompson may be the best coverage linebacker in the draft and he uses his elite athleticism to make plays against the run as well. The Giants desperately need a playmaker at the second level of their defense and there is no better player than Thompson to fill that void.
10. St. Louis Rams 2014 record: 6-10 (.531)
Pick: Brandon Scherff, OL, Iowa
Even though they selected Greg Robinson last year, the Rams should try to boost their offensive line once again. Brandon Scherff is one of the most versatile offensive lineman in the draft as he could fit at tackle or guard. Scherff is a great athlete who can make blocks at every level of the defense. He is a road grader at the point-of-attack as well and the Rams will benefit greatly from it.
11. Minnesota Vikings 2014 record: 7-9 (.475)
Pick: La’el Collins, OT, LSU
With Matt Khalil not living up to expectations, the Vikings need to find an offensive tackle who can adequately protect Teddy Bridgewater’s blindside. La’el Collins is the best option as he combines elite strength with above-average movement skills to be a left tackle. Collins has shown a lot of improvement since he was moved to left tackle by LSU and there is no reason why he shouldn’t continue to do so in the NFL.
12. Cleveland Browns 2014 record: 7-9 (.479)
Pick: Kevin White, WR, West Virginia
Josh Gordon is facing another yearlong suspension and the Browns are in desperate need of weapons on the outside. The Browns could go Amari Cooper here, but Kevin White fits their offense better as he consistently wins at the catch point and in the red zone. White would give Johnny Manziel a great weapon to grow with and would help take some pressure off the Browns’ rushing attack.
13. New Orleans Saints 2014 record: 7-9 (.486)
Pick: T.J. Clemmings, OT, Pittsburgh
With Drew Brees getting older, the Saints need to do whatever they can to keep him upright. Even though he struggled mightily in the Senior Bowl, Clemmings is the best pick here. He has all the traits you look for in an offensive tackle and he just needs a little bit of refinement. If Clemmings can polish up some of his issues in pass protection, he has the potential to be an elite tackle in the NFL.
14. Miami Dolphins 2014 record: 8-8 (.512)
Pick: Jake Fisher, OT, Oregon
The Dolphins continue the run on offensive tackles as they go with Jake Fisher from Oregon. Ask Mariota how good Fisher was in college as Oregon’s offensive line was totally different without him in the fold. Is Fisher really worth a Top-15 pick? Probably not, but the Dolphins have shown that they aren’t afraid to reach for a player at a position of need as was the case with Ja’Wuan James last year.
15. San Francisco 49ers 2014 record: 8-8 (.527)
Pick: Danny Shelton, NT, Washington
Danny Shelton is the hottest name in the media right now as he possesses elite athleticism for his size and can be a plug and play 0-technique in the NFL. Shelton isn’t on par with B.J. Raji or Dontari Poe, but someone will likely fall in love with the numerous splash plays that Shelton makes and ignore all the holes in his game. The 49ers could be the team to fall into this trap as they try to get a prolific nose tackle on their defense.
16. Houston Texans 2014 record: 9-7 (.447)
Pick: Malcom Brown, DT, Texas
J.J. Watt is the best player in the NFL, but he needs help too. Malcom Brown has the ability to be a very nose tackle or 5-technique defensive for the Texans defense. Brown is incredibly strong and is great at beating an offensive lineman’s initial punch. He would give the Texans another productive defensive lineman and hopefully take some of the pressure off Watt’s shoulders.
17. San Diego Chargers 2014 record: 9-7 (.512)
Pick: Ereck Flowers, OT, Miami
With D.J. Fluker likely moving inside to guard, the Chargers are in need of an offensive tackle with good movement skills to mirror on the outside, Ereck Flowers may be the player the Chargers are looking for. He has imposing size to go with nimble feet in pass protection. In the run game, he is an aggressive blocker who uses his size to his advantage.
18. Kansas City Chiefs 2014 record: 9-7 (.512)
Pick: Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama
Everyone knows about the struggles the Chiefs had with their wide receivers last year. The Chiefs should feel ecstatic with Cooper still on the board as he could be the answer to their prayers. Cooper knows how to create separation with his routes and he has the ability to create after the catch as well. With Cooper in the fold, the Chiefs will definitely throw at least one touchdown to a wide receiver this year.
19. Cleveland Browns 2014 record: 7-9 (.479)
Pick: Jordan Phillips, DT, Oklahoma
With their second pick in the first round, the Browns have the ability to go in many different directions. The best option may be to select the “dancing bear” Jordan Phillips. He has elite athletic traits for a defensive tackle and he combines it with incredible strength and almost unlimited upside. He has the ability to play at a high level at numerous spots on the Browns defensive line and he would be a great addition to an underrated defense.
20. Philadelphia Eagles 2014 record: 10-6 (.490)
Pick: Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State
The Eagles faltered down the stretch in part because of their subpar cornerback play as Bradley Fletcher and Cary Williams were abused by opposing offenses. The best coverage cornerback in the draft is Marcus Peters, but his off field issues will likely push him down in the draft. Therefore, the Eagles should go with Trae Waynes here. He has the height and length teams look for in a cornerback to go with fluid hips and good footwork. Waynes is already much better than Fletcher and he would significantly upgrade the Eagles secondary on day one.
21. Cincinnati Bengals 2014 record: 10-5-1 (.498)
Pick: Owamagbe Odighizuwa, DE, UCLA
The Bengals were last in the league in sacks and are in desperate need of an upgrade at the defensive end position. Owamagbe Odighizuwa has the size, strength and length you look for in a defensive end and he can step in right away and be an impact player for the Bengals. He is great at stuffing the run and he has enough quickness to make an impact as a pass rusher as well.
22. Pittsburgh Steelers 2014 record: 11-5 (.451)
Pick: Eli Harold, DE, Virginia
The Steelers need more production out of their outside linebackers and they need to look to upgrade the position in the offseason. Eli Harold fits that bill, as he is a dynamic pass-rusher who has incredible upfield burst and bend to win on the edge. He needs to learn to disengage off blocks better, but his violent hands and explosive movement skills are very valuable traits to have. Harold has the potential to be the next great outside linebacker for the Steelers.
23. Detroit Lions 2014 record: 11-5 (.471)
Pick: Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford
The Lions are yet another team that needs help at offensive tackle and for that reason they could take a stab at Andrus Peat. Peat has everything you want from a tackle from a size and athletic standpoint. Nevertheless, he is still available at this point because he doesn’t have that finishing, nasty attitude. The Lions could be the team who thinks they can develop that nasty streak as they rationalize selecting him at this point.
24. Arizona Cardinals 2014 record: 11-5 (.523)
Pick: Vic Beasley, OLB, Clemson
The Cardinals didn’t have anyone who could consistently get pressure off the edge last year, but that all changes if they bring Beasley into the fold. He is the best pure pass rusher in the draft and the Cardinals are lucky he fell this far. His bad habits against the run need fixing, but you can’t discount how prolific of a pass-rusher he is.
25. Carolina Panthers 2014 record: 7-8-1 (.490)
Pick: DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville
The Panthers had success picking a receiver last year in Kelvin Benjamin and they need to go back to the well again as they need to get Cam Newton another weapon. DeVante Parker would bring a big play element to the Panthers as he is one of the better receivers in this draft when it comes to stretching the field. Parker would give the Panthers a legit one-two punch at wide receiver and finally give Newton adequate weapons to work with.
26. Baltimore Ravens 2014 record: 10-6 (.475)
Pick: Nelson Agholar, WR, USC
Another team who will likely be in the receiver market will be the Baltimore Ravens. Steve Smith isn’t getting any younger and Joe Flacco needs another weapon to go opposite of Torrey Smith. Agholar can run a full route tree and he is efficient with his feet and displays an extremely high motor. He isn’t a hot name right now, but expect that to change as the process continues.
27. Dallas Cowboys 2014 record: 12-4 (.445)
Pick: Eric Rowe, FS, Utah
Another under-the-radar player who will likely work his way into the first round is Eric Rowe. He has the ability to play at cornerback and safety as he is an extremely physical player who knows how to play in space. The Cowboys have been looking for a great free safety ever since Darren Woodson retired. Rowe would be a great fit for the Cowboys as he displays the ability to play as a single-high safety when they go to Cover-1 or Cover-3. On top of that, he would give the Cowboys the flexibility to stay in base defense against three wide receiver sets, which allows them to not have to sacrifice against the run to play the pass.
28. Denver Broncos 2014 record: 12-4 (.521)
Pick: Maxx Williams, TE, Minnesota
If the Broncos are unable to re-sign Julius Thomas, Maxx Williams would be a great option as a replacement. He excels as a receiver as he combines his huge catch radius with precise routes and soft hands. He needs to improve as a blocker, but Thomas wasn’t a great blocker for the Broncos anyways. Williams allows the Broncos to not have to miss a beat even if they lose Thomas to free agency.
29. Indianapolis Colts 2014 record: 11-5 (.479)
Pick: Ty Sambrailo, OL, Colorado State
The Colts need to find a way to keep Andrew Luck upright, as they have struggled to protect him since they selected him. Ty Sambrailo can play anywhere on the Colts’ offensive line and make a positive impact. He is a technician who needs to develop more strength to survive at tackle in the NFL. If the Colts can improve his strength and allow him to play to where he wins, he will be a great player for the Colts.
30. Green Bay Packers 2014 record: 12-4 (.482)
Pick: Eric Kendricks, LB, UCLA
The Packers have not had great production from their inside linebackers and they have even had to resort to playing Clay Matthews there on occasion. Eric Kendricks has the ability to change that fact. He is a playmaker who can make plays from sideline to sideline. This is the classic value pick for the Packers as their biggest need coincides with great value in getting Kendricks in the late first.
31. Seattle Seahawks 2014 record: 12-4 (.525)
Pick: Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin
32. New England Patriots 2014 record: 12-4 (.514)
Pick: Jaelen Strong, WR, Arizona State
The Patriots always seem to fall into great value picks and they do so again here. The Patriots need someone who can take pressure off Rob Gronkowski in the red zone and there may not be a better red-zone threat then Jaelen Strong. He is a monster at the catch point as he has natural hands and incredible leaping ability. The Patriots give Tom Brady another weapon, which should scare defenses everywhere.
