2014 Heisman Trophy Rankings: Prescott Surging
Toddy Gurley is holding strong, but he has tough competition for the most prestigious individual award in sports.
Since we now have a handful of games to look at for each team it seems like the appropriate time to release our Heisman Rankings.
Heisman Rankings
1. Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia
There really hasn’t been a more explosive player in college football. Gurley is a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball and he accounts for one-on-one coverage on the outside, which benefits quarterback Hutson Mason and the passing game. There hasn’t been a Heisman winner from the running back position since Mark Ingram in 2009, but if there’s going to be another one he has to come from the nation’s best conference, and he has to be the most dominant player in the conference. Check and check.
2. Dak Prescott, QB, Mississippi State
The best quarterback in the SEC burst onto the scene with his 341-yard, five touchdown performance in the Bulldogs’ victory over sixth-ranked Texas A&M. Prescott is a dual threat quarterback who can take a game over by himself and he plays in the best division in the best conference, so there’s going to be plenty of opportunities for him to get big wins (or losses) each week.
3. Ameer Abdullah, RB, Nebraska
Ameer Abdullah keeps putting up video-game numbers (assuming anyone runs the football anymore in video games), and he has a Heisman moment, albeit it came against McNeese State. Abdullah is the Nebraska offense, but playing in the Big 10 will hurt him a bit due to the lack of big games.
4. Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama
Amari Cooper is the best offensive player from the best team in the best division of the best conference. He is a fantastic wideout who has benefited greatly from new offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin’s play-calling (when was the last time anyone was able to say that?). Cooper has explosive speed, great hands and he reminds many talent scouts of former Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones.
5. Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
Marcus Mariota began the season as the Heisman favorite and likely held that top spot right until Arizona upset the Ducks on Thursday night. Mariota is a shining star on what has appeared to become a very average Oregon team around him. The one loss probably doesn’t do irreparable damage to his Heisman candidacy because he played well, but he can’t afford to lose another game. If he does, he’ll probably have to settle for being the first pick in the NFL Draft.
Outside the box guy to keep an eye on: Rakeem Cato, QB, Marshall
Cato has led the Thundering Herd to a perfect 5-0 start and they’ll likely be favored in every remaining game in Conference USA. Cato has accounted for 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions and he’s one of the most explosive players that most people haven’t heard of.
