We examine the latest CFP committee’s rankings as well as the Florida head coaching vacancy.
Eye Test Matters
In the second to last College Football Playoff Rankings, the committee gave everyone in the college football world some water cooler talk as they dropped Florida State, the only undefeated team in the FBS to fourth in their rankings.
Florida State seems to have close calls every single week but they’ve found themselves in the win column in every game going back to November of 2012. Clearly their lack of style points is swaying the committee.
Passing the defending national champs this week is 10-1 TCU, who handled business against Texas, 48-10. TCU wraps up their season this Saturday against 2-9 Iowa State, leaving the door open for them to be possibly leaped over by FSU, Ohio State and even Baylor.
“We’re at the point, we’re waiting for results now,” selection committee chairman and Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long said. “We’re waiting for teams to complete their body of work. Again, we don’t project out. We’ve all seen games that have different outcomes than we expect.
“We focus on what has been accomplished to this point, and with that regard, the top four teams to this point are ranked where the committee believes they should be.”
Apparently, the committee is playing by its’ own set of rules as they appear to be making it up as they go along (Roger Goodell approves).
Baylor has played the exact same conference schedule as TCU including a head-to-head win over the Horned Frogs, yet finds themselves three spots lower.
“As we pointed out before, TCU has five wins over teams with winning records or .500 records and above, and Baylor has three, if you include Texas at 6-6,” Long said. “I can’t say it’s one thing. It’s a number of things we look at, and we believe TCU is better and deserving of that No. 3 rank over Baylor.”
With one weekend left of football, nobody knows what to expect from the committee. The only teams that appear to be safe are No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Oregon, who host Missouri and Arizona respectively. Even if FSU, TCU, Ohio State and Baylor all win, nobody knows which two of those teams will be announced in the playoff on Sunday.
Gators Turn To McElwaine After Kelly Spurns Interest
The Florida Gators’ head coaching job should be one of the best in the country. With that said, they don’t quite have the gravitas to call and get a meeting with anyone they want.
Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach Chip Kelly has been rumored as a candidate for the job, but he squashed many of those rumors on Wednesday.
“Florida hasn’t contacted me,” Kelly said. “And if they did, I wouldn’t listen. It’s false. I think false things are silly.”
Another NFL candidate, New England Patriots’ offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels denied being contacted by the school, but at the same time didn’t deny interest.
“I really honestly don’t even have any idea about that rumor,” McDaniels said Tuesday. “I heard it. But I have nothing to add to it. My focus is solely on the Chargers and getting our team ready to go on offense. I’m trying to do the best that I can.”
According to various media reports, Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley met with Colorado State head coach Jim McElwaine Tuesday in the hopes to work out a deal for McElwaine to become the next Florida Gators head coach.
McElwaine is 22-16 over the past three years at Colorado State, including a 10-2 mark this season. Unlike recently departed head coach Will Muschamp, McElwaine has head coaching experience and great success, resurrecting the program in Fort Collins.
When Colorado State hired McElwaine, they put in a pricey buyout clause which is reported to be $7.5 million. With the seemingly limitless resources that Florida possesses, the buyout shouldn’t be a deal-breaker, especially considering that McElwaine shouldn’t command a salary that some of the elite coaches in the nation have.
