11-2-14 Heisman Trophy Rankings

We have a new name on our Top 5 Heisman list and a the rankings have had a bit of a shakeup.

It’s a wide open season for the Heisman Trophy. Let’s see who tops the board this week.

Heisman Rankings

1. Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon

Much like college football itself, there’s a lot of parity at the top when we’re discussing the Heisman. You don’t need the stat sheet to tell you that Mariota has been the top performer in college football this season. He exorcised his personal demons with Oregon’s victory over Stanford and the Ducks appear ready to run the table and get in the playoff.

2. Dak Prescott, QB, Mississippi State

Prescott is a step below Mariota as a quarterback but he does have the “SEC bias” working for him when you consider that he’s the quarterback for the top-ranked, undefeated team in the nation. Prescott seems to be regressing of late and he didn’t play a great game in the Bulldogs victory over Arkansas.

3. Ameer Abdullah, RB, Nebraska

Abdullah’s Heisman candidacy took a hit on Saturday as he was hurt in the first quarter of Nebraska’s 35-14 victory over Purdue. Abdullah left the game with just one yard rushing. On the season, Abdullah has over 1,400 yards from scrimmage with 19 touchdowns, and he is the main reason his team is ranked in the Top 15.

4. Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin

Gordon had another solid game as he ran for 128 yards on just 19 carries with two more touchdowns in the Badgers’ 37-0 victory over Rutgers. The junior from Kenosha, Wisconsin has over 1,300 yards from scrimmage and 19 touchdowns in just eight games this season. Gordon has been pretty consistent, going over 100 yards in seven of Wisconsin’s eight games, going over 200 yards in two games and being held under 100 yards in just one game.

5. Nick Marshall, QB, Auburn

Marshall has quietly been great this season. After a slower start to the season, Marshall has come on in recent weeks leading the Tigers to big victories over K-State, LSU and Ole Miss. Marshall has completed just under 60 percent of his throws, but has nearly 2,000 yards combined (passing and rushing) with 22 touchdowns and just four interceptions.

Mariota must keep his numbers up and can’t afford to lose another game. Abdullah and Gordon aren’t tied to team success, but they have to put up video game style numbers the rest of the way. Dak Prescott will be in the mix as long as his team keeps winning even though his numbers have been dropping and Nick Marshall could sneak into this mix so long as he keeps winning games.
