10/26/14 Heisman Rankings

We have a new player at the top of our Heisman Rankings. Find out where the top guys rank in our weekly poll.

It’s a wide open season for the Heisman Trophy. Let’s see who tops the board this week.

Heisman Rankings

1. Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon

Marcus Mariota has successfully withstood a loss and clawed his way back to the top of our Heisman rankings. Mariota is simply the best quarterback in America and he continues to prove it each and every week. Marcus threw for 326 yards and five touchdowns as he led his Ducks to a 59-point performance on the road Thursday night.

2. Ameer Abdullah, RB, Nebraska

Ameer Abdullah has been consistently great all season long and he put up 225 yards and three more touchdowns in Nebraska’s 42-24 blowout victory over Rutgers. Abdullah has been so good this season that the 225 yards is only his third-highest rushing total of 2014. Abdullah has a great shot to win the award being that quarterbacks are judged more on wins and losses than running backs.

3. Dak Prescott, QB, Mississippi State

Dak Prescott was our leader every week in our poll until this week. Prescott has made a lot of mistakes and still struggles with accuracy and turnovers. Although he plays for the No. 1 team in the nation, he has had a few weeks where he hasn’t been spectacular and it’s likely that Mississippi State is going to lose at least one game.

4. Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin

It’s a tough race when you score three touchdowns and your team wins a conference game by 45 points and you lose ground. That’s the 2014 Heisman world that we’re living in. Melvin Gordon has been tremendous this year but unfortunately for him he isn’t the best running back in his conference.

5. Jameis Winston

For Jameis Winston to win the Heisman everyone ahead of him must lose multiple games and he has to put up huge numbers the rest of the way… and that might not even be enough. Even if his team is undefeated again (he’s never actually lost a collegiate game), his off the field stuff will prevent him from winning the award.

Marcus Mariota must keep his numbers up and can’t afford to lose another game. Ameer Abdullah and Melvin Gordon aren’t tied to team success, but they have to put up video game style numbers. Dak Prescott will be in the mix as long as his team keeps winning unless his numbers completely go in the tank and Jameis Winston needs somewhat of a miracle to be only the second player to win two Heisman trophies.
