NFL notebook: Tebow officially joins Eagles
The Sports Xchange
The Philadelphia Eagles signed quarterback Tim Tebow, more than two years removed from his last NFL action, to a one-year contract Monday.
The Eagles made it official after news broke Sunday evening of the agreement.
Tebow, 27, worked out for the Eagles on March 16 and was scheduled to participate in Philadelphia’s offseason workouts, which began Monday.
Tebow will join an Eagles’ quarterback group that includes Sam Bradford, Mark Sanchez, Matt Barkley and G.J. Kinne.
Since last appearing in a game for the New York Jets in 2012, Tebow joined ESPN as an analyst for the SEC Network in 2014, where he primarily worked on “SEC Nation.”
Originally a first-round draft choice (25th overall) of the Denver Broncos in 2010, the 6-foot-3, 236-pound Tebow has appeared in 35 games with 16 starts.
—Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who rarely participated in offseason workouts while with the Detroit Lions, was present on the first day of the Miami Dolphins’ offseason program.
Suh signed a six-year $114 million contract — $60 million guaranteed — with the Dolphins last month, making him the highest-paid defender in NFL history.
With the Lions, Suh preferred to stay home and work out with a personal trainer. The Dolphins’ non-mandatory offseason program mostly starts with strength work during the first week.
—Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel begins offseason workouts with his teammates, hoping for a fresh start after his controversial rookie season.
Manziel recently concluded 10 weeks at the Caron treatment center outside of Reading, Pa. Manziel arrived in Ohio several days ago and he was courtside for Game 1 of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ NBA playoff series Sunday against the Boston Celtics.
Manziel comes back to a new challenger for Cleveland’s quarterback job — veteran Josh McCown signed with the Browns after one season in Tampa Bay and 2014 starter Brian Hoyer left via free agency to join the Houston Texans. McCown signed a three-year, $14 million deal.
—Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who was reinstated by the NFL on Friday, did not attend the start of the team’s offseason workouts.
The Vikings had not been expecting Peterson to show up at their facility. The Pioneer Press reported it has nothing to do with Peterson being disgruntled because he has rarely been present for the offseason program.
Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune wrote Sunday that Peterson would receive $250,000 if he reported to the Vikings camp, but “nobody expects him to report under any circumstances.”
Peterson returned to active status for the first time since September, when child-abuse charges involving his 4-year-old son led to seven months on the sideline.
—Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro wide receiver Antonio Brown plans to skip the team’s offseason workouts as he seeks a new contract.
FOX Sports reported Brown is also thinking about not attending the team’s three-day mandatory minicamp starting June 16 and training camp beginning at the end of July.
Brown, 26, signed a five-year, $42.5 million extension with Pittsburgh in 2012 and then restructured his contract last season.
The 5-foot-10, 186-pound Brown, a sixth-round draft pick of the Steelers in 2010, led the NFL with 129 catches for 1,698 yards last season and had 13 receiving touchdowns. He also had 319 punt return yards with one touchdown. In his five seasons, Brown has 390 catches for 5,259 yards and 28 touchdowns.
—Pro football fans only have to wait one more day to find out the NFL schedule for the 2015 season.
The NFL announced that the schedule will be unveiled during a three-hour show on NFL Network starting at 8 p.m. ET Tuesday.
All 256 games will be revealed during the program, although not all games will remain in the same slots because of flexible scheduling procedures in place.
Among the highlights will be the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots’ opponent at Gillette Stadium on the opening Thursday night of the season Sept. 10. In addition, all of the prime-time television games will be announced.
—General manager Jason Licht knows everyone wants to know, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are preserving the drama surrounding the top pick in the 2015 NFL Draft for a few more days.
“If we had to pick today,” Licht said Monday at a news conference, “we’d feel very comfortable making the first pick.”
On the same day in which Newsday cited sources that the Buccaneers were listening to trade offers for the No. 1 pick, the drumbeat grew louder in Tampa on Monday that Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston will be selected first overall in 10 days.
The Buccaneers released 2014 starting quarterback Josh McCown on Feb. 14 and Smith endorsed Mike Glennon as the team’s No. 1 quarterback in February.
—Veteran safety Stevie Brown apparently wants to return to the New York Giants and could re-sign soon.
The New York Post reported Brown is considering a one-year offer on the table from the Giants after drawing interest from the Dallas Cowboys, Oakland Raiders, Atlanta Falcons and Tennessee Titans.
The 27-year-old Brown played in every game for the Giants last season and started eight games but struggled after coming off ACL surgery that forced him to miss the entire 2013 season.
Brown, who signed a one-year, $3 million deal last offseason, had 38 tackles and no interceptions in 2014, compared to 76 tackles and eight interceptions in 2012.
