Sam could be headed to CFL’s Alouettes

Published

Michael Sam could be heading to Canada to restart his football career.

The general manager of the Montreal Alouettes said the Canadian Football League team has a 50-50 shot of signing the defensive end.

Speaking to the Montreal Gazette on Tuesday, Alouettes GM Jim Popp said, “The CFL is cut out perfectly for his style. It would give him the opportunity to do what he does best. His agent knows. They’re ready. They know this (CFL) may be what it is. It’s Michael who has to make the decision — and he might never come.

“The indications were he was ready to come last fall, and he’s still not with us. So I really don’t know. Seriously, I’d say our chances are 50/50.”

Montreal gained the CFL rights to Sam during his senior year at the University of Missouri.

After completing his college career, Sam publicly announced that he is gay. He subsequently became the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team, as the St. Louis Rams selected him in the seventh round last year.

Sam recorded three sacks for the Rams in the 2014 preseason but failed to make the team’s season-opening roster. He later spent time on the Cowboys’ practice squad before he was released by Dallas in October.

The 6-foot-2, 261-pound Sam, whose strength is as a pass-rusher, recently participated in the NFL’s veteran free agent combine. He was the Southeastern Conference defensive player of the year in 2013.
